I am curious as to how the forum feels about the following. More than interested I would also like to discuss as well.
1. Smoking cigarettes
2. Speeding
3. Tattoos
4. Dancing
5. Video Games
So lets see what everything thinks...

1. Smoking cigarettes - Sin: no. Bad idea: Yes.
2. Speeding - Sin: No. Bad idea: In most cases.
3. Tattoos - Sin: No. Bad idea: In most cases. Look at it this way; in 1982 I looked indescribably cool in parachute pants, with my feathered hair to boot. Now I'd look like an idiot. Same with tats. Whild they may look cool now, when I'm 70 they'll just look like more discoloration on my skin.
4. Dancing - Sin: No. Bad idea: Not in most cases. If I were a parent, I'd teach my kids not to do nasty stuff like bumping & grinding and all that. But general dancing - it's OK.
5. Video games - Sin: No. Bad idea: No. PARENTS (and not the government) should do their part to make sure that violent or sexually explicit video games don't make it into the hands of children.

You and I are in total agreement there. I am currently struggling to quit after 15 years...
2. Speeding - Sin: No. Bad idea: In most cases.
This is one I tossed in there for fun. It's actually the one I think is sin off the list. We are told in scripture to obey the laws of our country.
Romans 13:1-7
1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
If we rebel by not obeying the laws set down by the authorities over us are we not sinning?
I doubt anyone needs me to expound on this topic to know what I think. ;)
4. Dancing - Sin: No. Bad idea: Not in most cases. If I were a parent, I'd teach my kids not to do nasty stuff like bumping & grinding and all that. But general dancing - it's OK.
I like the line you draw there. I don't have any skills in the bump and grind category so it was never an issue for me but I do love me a fast waltz.
5. Video games - Sin: No. Bad idea: No. PARENTS (and not the government) should do their part to make sure that violent or sexually explicit video games don't make it into the hands of children.
Good answer. I could go on for days about things parents should be doing and the government shouldn't!

You and I are in total agreement there. I am currently struggling to quit after 15 years...I really must recommend Allen Carr's book. It's easier than you think. I went from a hopeless tobacco junkie to a happy non-smoker in the amount of time I spent just reading his book.

The sad part for me is that it's not the nicotine. I can drop that easily. It's the ritual. I could quit cold turkey if not for the mental habit. The first day on the gum I almost had a panic attack driving because I didn't know what to do with my hands! I have switched to ultra lights and the amount I smoked stayed the same. I would switch to tobacco free smokes but the reality is that they are likely just as bad for you in different ways. I am a very strange case to be honest...

The sad part for me is that it's not the nicotine. The good part is, that doesn't matter one bit! Seriously, it doesn't matter exactly what it is about the smoking that you're addicted to. I'm pretty much like you, and suffering from a complete lack of self control. But Carr's book doesn't ask you to quit, it only changes the way you see yourself and your habit. And the best part is, you won't miss smoking a bit!

Agreed. Though even the non violent and sexually explicit video games can end up not good if played too much.

speeding is always a sin, unless you're trying to rush someone to the hospital...
The rest of them are all sin if you would rather do them than worship God.

So lets see what everything thinks...
1. It's a sin in my opinion. What about the verse that says "our bodies are a temple" blah blah blah. Smoking destroys the body from the inside out.
2. Depends.
3) Tattoos. I think they're OK. They're not harmful to your health (most of the time)
4) If it's tasteful.
5) Videogames are not a sin if you know your limits.

I have a friend who has a great testimony on this subject. She prayed God would take away her love for smoking (for her it was also the ritual) and the next morning she had pus-filled blisters on her tonsils and was unable to speak. She has not touched a cigarette in almost 4 months now. :)
