View Full Version : Lutheran REUNION

Edial

About 8 months ago we kind of hoped for a reunion that was postponed till Summer 2007.
http://www.christianforums.com/t3051551-do-lutherans-have-reunions.html

We kind of came to the conclusion to call it Theologia Crusis Potluck and have it in St.Louis (central location).

Theologia Crusis POTLUCK.

Summer 2007, St. Louis

What do you say?

Sign me up. It would have to be a Sat or Sun. Better yet, meet on Sat afternoon, then plan to worship together somewhere on Sunday. I think we can find a Lutheran Church somewhere in St. Louis. ;)

Yea it still sound like a good idea. I like filo's sugestion on a weekend conclave.

As a possible church to visit I would suggest St.Marks in Eureka. A mix of liturgical and mild contemporary

There are a lot of reasons why that is so misleading, but it would take another thread to discuss that.

I think the worship should be at Historic Trinity Lutheran. The one that Walther preached throughout his ministry.

Otherwise Fort Wayne, IN has many Lutheran churches. Even a few ELCA ones.

Trinity Lutheran Church is in the Soulard area of St.louis and, to my opinion would not be the best option. The area is an oasis in a somewhat marginal area. It would also be hard to find for visitors.

St.louis is very small compared to the St.louis Metropolitan area. The census in 2005 put it at 344K while the greater metropolitan area was put at 2.7M. The greater metropolitain area offers more options.

Dinkime has it right that they have a wealth of tourist and cultural attractions. You could spend weeks visting all the sites in St.louis proper.

Concordia Seminary is located in Clayton and the LCMS headquarters is located in Kirkwood. Both are surburbs of St.louis.

And YES--the Anheuser-Bush brewery is there. I spent 30 years working there so am somewhat familiar with it.

Southwest and America West have super fairs to this city. You could fly to this city with a 200$ roundtrip fare, or less.

I would volunteer to be the tour guide and I'm sure there are others that would help in some capacity. I could rent a 12 passenger van, if they are still available, for the weekend. Now that I will soon be unencumbered I will have all the time in the world.

Oasis in somewhat marginal area? When was the last time you've been in Soulard. It's pretty thriving now.

If you all come to St. Louis, I promise I won't subject you to my church, which has all contemporary music and isn't what you would call liturgical.

One that I think is a fine church is Ascension Lutheran in the St. Louis Hills area (very close to Ted Drews Frozen Custard). A friend of mine was the church secretary (actually the friend who's sons died) at that church and I really like the pastor and I think you would too. It's a traditional and liturgical service, but I don't think the sanctuary is all that pretty (I hate bright red carpets).

One of the most beautiful, but simplistic, churches is St. John's Lutheran at Morganford and Chippewa. I got married there (our church was building at the time). It looked like an old Catholic church, so my mom was happy. High ceilings, pretty stained glass. If you think you might be interested, I can post a wedding picture showing it. I don't know who is currently pastor there, however. My friends who went there and secured it for us moved to a church in the 'burbs a few years ago.

That's in "South City" St. Louis. I attended an Easter Day service there in '04. My son was living on Hereford and was only a few blocks from the church.
As I remember it was a very nice traditional church.

What would be the options for fellowship dinner?

Barbeque in a park? Restaurant?

C.F.W. Walther

First off I think that maybe a volunteers commitee should be formed to coordinate all the activities so that the amount of time we have can be used to our advantage. Ed seems like the most likely candidate to head it up.

I would consider that there would only be 2 days to get the activities accomplished. Say Friday night to early Sunday afternoon for those that are traveling. So I would think a dinner at a restaurant would be a better option.

Volunteer #2 - Edial - Chairman of Scheduling and Coordination Team.

Any volunteers from St. Louis area or vicinity to join this Team?

Objectives:
1. Establish the reunion date for Summer 2007.
1. Registration of reunion members.
2. Select a church for Sunday worship.
3. Place for Friday night gathering to introduce ourselves and fellowship.
4. Saturday site-seeing and fellowship.

I personally would want to see it.
Some however, have probably seen it already.

Maybe to schedule it during the "free time" of the schedule?
But if all want to go - during regular scheduled time?

We'll have free time and scheduled time.

I've been to the seminary, but not on a tour - sounds very interesting!

I loved all the old German texts in the library.

All I ask is that if we go to a restaurant, we go somewhere "St. Louis" and not necessarily touristy like the Hard Rock. Our microbrew is Schafley, and we have two fine restaurants run by the brewery - Tap Room downtown, and Bottleworks in Maplewood. There are a lot of other places that would fit as well. If we end up going to that church in Soulard, there are a lot of fine restaurants and pubs near there. Just a suggestion - I'm terrible at planning get-togethers.

Yea, Rad, Soulard and downtown are really changing for the better, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

You don't need to plan anything.
We just need an "in" person who knows St. Louis.
If you know a restaurant. Maybe it has a website?
No one really wants a "tourist trap", but something that is refelective of St. Louis.
Brewery would also be interesting. A website?

The "in" person would really be helpful at the day of reunion.

The scheduling, organizing and such would take place way before that ... and of course will be amended a week before. :)

You wanna join the organizing/scheduling team? :)

I meant to have it scheduled within our schedule.

Our schedule would have a time during which all agree to go together some places.
That schedule would also have free time when people would want to explore St. Louis on their own or in small groups, ... or just to rest.

Then we all meet again for dinner or whatever.

We would all agree for example, to go to a church service, dinners, fellowship where filo, yourself and Scott would give (short :)) devotionals that could be held at a park, or hotel lobby or conference room ... we'll see.

Since we are on a time chedule we then might think of centralizing out activities. "The Hill" is not too far from the seminary and both are in the Clayton area. Soulard, where the church is, is a few miles further but can be accessed in a decent time frame possibly. Depends on the time allocated. The Busch Brewery is right down the road from Soulard. Both have good restaurants.

The only problem I see is overnite accomodations. Flipper might know of places to stay that would be "OK". Is there any places in Clayton that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg?

There's a couple motels right off I-44 at Hampton. One is a Red Roof Inn and the other is the Holiday Inn Forest Park. Price is OK for St. Louis.
They're not too far from the "Hill", a hop-skip-n-jump from the seminary. Down the road is Forrest Park and the zoo.

Flipper, any luck finding out about the hotels?

Yes Boss!!!

Red Roof Inn at Forest Park.
314-645-0101
1 adult $98.99 to $103.99/night

Holiday Inn Forest Park
314-745-0700
1 adult $104 to $149/night

(ironically, the one near me on South Lindbergh charges $93 to $131 a night)

Hampton Inn Forest Park (it's new)
314-655-3993
1 adult $139 to $159/night

These are all based on the websites. I suggest looking at Expedia.com or something like that maybe to find a cheaper rate. Or, if you have AAA membership, I know Hampton Inn will give discounts to AAA members.

If there is a group and no one is too picky, maybe you can get a group rate, but no one will give me that information unless I have a definite number.

Also want to add that the Hampton Inn is on the site of the former Checkerdome/Arena. If you are a Blues Fan with nostalgic feelings - this is the hotel for you!

Volunteer #4 recommendation.

There might be some people that might not afford full hotel rates.
That should not hinder them from coming.

There might be some money coming in assisting such needs.

We need a Treasurer who would distribute such finances as he sees fit. That should be done confidentially.

I recommend filosofer for a Treasurer.

Thanks for the kind recommendation. However, I think it would be better for a lay person to handle the financial details. This stems from my pastoral practice of never being involved with any financial matters in the congregation. It just prevents possible complaints that I can't afford (poor pun ).

Sorry, I've been distracted - my grandpa passed away last Friday and the funeral was Tuesday, and I have a lot of family in town right now. Plus, I've been busy at work.

I'm sorry to say this, but I'm having second thoughts about wanting to get together this summer and was going to mention it before, then it got rather crazy.

It seems like whenever I spend any real time on this board, I find myself getting angry at someone and lashing out. I'm sure the problem is as much me as anyone else, but I can't say it would be very fair of me to push a get-together, when I'm trying to back away from the boards in the spirit of avoiding conflict and keeping my marriage healthy.

I really like what you have to say, Ed, and I agree with you much more than I disagree, but you can control your temper and emotions much better than I can.

I'm sorry about all this, but it's best I say something now, rather than later.

You're so very right there!

I've been on the internet for about 16 years now and have been on numerous message boards and forums. I've also met in person some of the people from those boards. Some people have surprised me as I had a totally different idea in my head as to who they were and how they would act!! It's great to finally meet the real personalities behind the online personalities. I myself talk a lot online...but offline I'm pretty quiet and giggly :)

One woman I met on a Christian mother's board called me up to talk about some issues we had with other women on the board and the first thing out of her mouth was, "You sound totally different that I had in mind!" She thought I'd have a deeper, harsh voice because of the way I had posted on the boards...I'm very to the point. But my voice sounds pretty much like a little girl's voice so I guess I shocked her ;)

Anyway, think about it. I don't know if I'll be able to go yet, but it really sounds like it will be a fun time

For me, it's somewhat location. We're having a lot of expenses that we didn't intend on right now, so money is tight...so traveling that far is looking like it won't happen for me this year.

I'd prefer Chicago for a get together...but that's me ;)

Come on, now.

Do we need to wait for heaven to talk to each other face to face?
I hope not, Ed. :) But this trip isn't looking like it will work at the moment.

Chicago would be much better for me...but may not be for others.

I would love to go to St. Louis. My son and grandson live there. I just don't think that two trips west this year will fit my budget.

How about Philadelphia?? :D
