John the Baptist stated that someone (Jesus) would be coming greater then him who would baptize with the holy spirit and with fire.
What does this mean? Is this something believers go through? If so how does it happen?

It means immersion in the Spirit. Becoming one with God through Yeshua. Being born from above by the Spirit. This was the 'will of the one who sent Yeshua'. So that everyone the Father has given him would be raised (John 6:38-40), by the power of the Spirit.
Every believer goes through this immersion or they do not enter the Kingdom.
John 3:5 Yeshua answered, "Yes, indeed, I tell you that unless a person is born from water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. 6 What is born from the flesh is flesh, and what is born from the Spirit is spirit. Stop being amazed at my telling you that you must be born again 7 from above! 8 The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it's going. That's how it is with everyone who has been born from the Spirit."
John 14:15 "If you love me, you will keep my commands; 16 and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another comforting Counselor like me, the Spirit of Truth, to be with you forever.
Ac 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Ac 2:33 Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has poured out what you both see and hear.
Ac 2:38 Repent, Peter said to them, and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
How does it happen?
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Gal 3:5
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith.
And faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17) the Words of Yeshua proclaimed.
Matthew 21:22 In other words, you will receive everything you ask for in prayer, no matter what it is, provided you have trust."
