I am in need of some help here. I need to know if it is possible for me to continue to keep kosher while I am pregnant. I am wondering this simply because I am so new to Messianic Judaism. I just do not know. This is the first time that I have been pregnant since I became Messianic and I am not sure what I am suppose to do.

Not sure why being pregnant would be any different. Millions of Jewish women seem to get along fine, and I certainly didn't have any problems with it. :)

If anything it should be of more importance, since it is a healthier diet. Is there a particular area of concern for you?

I've been thinking about it and my only concerns are the vitamins one is requred to take (well naturally that would be a concern of mine considering my other dietary restrictions :P)....

I don't see where keeping kosher otherwise would be a concern if you do have a good grocery store or farmer's market - and if you have a good healthfood store that has all their labels marked clearly what prenatals are kosher. :)

Better than prenatals is Floradix + Iron & Herbs, which Is kosher, and comes in a gluten-free formula also. It's liquid, and Plant based, so it tastes good and is very easily absorbed. :)

A hot dog in each hand. Beef ones that is!! Ha Ha. Kidding!

I guess it might be prudent to ask what your definition of kosher is? I also understand that cooking certain things is harder to do when pregnant if you are prone to sickness - the smell of cooking meat can turn the stomach. I have a friend who swears by sausages (if you can buy kosher ones) because you can just stick them in the pan and walk away. Another option may be to see a nutrianist for a vegetarien pregnancy diet and then add kosher meat to the dishes you want to (that's what I plan to do with my next pregnancy). The Floradix + Iron & Herbs is good but not enough. You need to make sure you are getting enough folate, calcium and DHA(lack of which is linked to ADHD and other disorders).

A note on food content:
It was much easier back in the day to get the required vits/minerals from food then it is now. We can eat as they ate but it might not be enough for us like it was for them. A study, that wasn't done recently so it is most probably worse now, showed that the content of 100g a brocolli in 1991 gave 150mg of magnesium, but in 1999 that same 100g on gave 24mg or magnesium - big difference. To get the most out of your food it is best to buy organic, it may be more expensive but you need to eat less to get the same amount of nutrien. But with this in mind, I would strongly suggest finding an organic or vegan multivitamin which will be more likely be kosher because I personally don't know of any that would say they are kosher on the bottle but I could be wrong, different countries and all.

Vitamins is one of my concerns, and the smell of certain foods is another. I cannot stand the smell of cooking meat. It does make my stomach turn. As far as my definition of kosher, I am still learning about it. I do appreciate the responses. I have been at a loss.

I'm a third generation vegetarian - and a "matrure momma" (i.e old) and I had no problem with either pregnancy. If you want easy to fix vegetarian alternatives to meat check out the MorningStar Farms section in your local grocery freezer. They are all kosher too!

As for the vitamins - if you can't find them locally you can always get them here: www.koshervitamins.com

We're gettin another baby?

Cool

You know if you DONT eat meat it makes keeping kosher a lot simpler than if you do.
So would seem to me that if you don't like the smell of cooking meat maybe the easiest thing to do is just not eat it?

As for any of the rest well I am uniquely unqualified to discuss Pregnancy issues with you!

But I do like babies ;)

Yes, we are getting another baby, due sometime at the end of July. And thank you for your advice about not eating meat. I think I will do that.

I just wanted to take a moment to say that I really do appreciate every suggestion.
