Former Presidents Carter & Clinton call for 'A New Baptist Covenant’
Jan 10, 2007

Baptist Press
ATLANTA (BP)--Former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have proposed the establishment of a broadly inclusive alternative Baptist movement to counter what they called a negative image of Baptists and to address poverty, the environment and global conflicts.
Carter and Clinton kicked off their plans with a news conference Jan. 9 at the Carter Center in Atlanta, flanked by leaders of moderate Baptist groups including the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a breakaway group of an unverified number of churches that objected to the election of conservative leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention. Carter and Clinton announced a “Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant,” tentatively set for Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2008, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, which they hope will attract 20,000 Baptists.
“This is a historic event for the Baptists in this country and perhaps for Christianity,” Carter said at the news conference.

Oh no! Like we really need a new Baptist denomination with a liberal agenda that will only serve to tarnish our image. I can see it coming already!

Carter Center Board Members Rebuke Carter’s Leadership

ATLANTA (BP)--Two days after launching his bid to lead a new Baptist movement, Jimmy Carter’s leadership of the Carter Center was rejected by 14 members of his advisory board.
The 14 advisory board members at the former president’s human rights center resigned in protest Jan. 11, citing Carter's controversial book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," and his lopsided advocacy for the Palestinian cause, The Wall Street Journal has reported.
Carter and former President Bill Clinton announced their initiative Jan. 9 to unite moderate and liberal Baptists along issues that align with the Democratic Party’s political agenda. A proposed 2008 confab, “Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant,” will coincide with a U.S. presidential election year when Clinton’s wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D.-N.Y.), is a possible candidate.

Well, I like Clinton as a politician, and I'd vote for him for almost any political office. But for rather obvious reasons, I don't think I'd trust him to run the church.

I don't like the sound of Clinton mingling with Christianity. Unless of course he has changed hs opinions o things such as the existence of absolute truth.

I have to doubt the sincerity of any who use their public name in order to make money.

If the organization would stick to biblical principals of helping those that most need it- the poor, disabled, widowed, orphaned, etc.- then it might not be a bad idea.
Unfortunately, I can see this turning into a platform to endorse socio-behavioral patterns instead of address economic problems.

That one smells more like fundamentalist propaganda. President Clinton, much like President Bush, was at least nominally Christian. All modern Presidents have had to do this. To practice any religion other than Christianity or (perhaps) Judaism would be political suicide. I'm fairly certain that President Clinton wouldn't have had a séance at the White House, for fear of public opinion.
Then again, President Clinton did various other activities in the White House without concern for public opinion...

He was a nice guy but he was completely ineffective as President. Inflation was up. Unemployment was high. The Iranians took hostages.
It is like at my job. There is a nice Christian lady who works with me. I love her as a person, but she is so unable to do her job, it makes it very frustrating for the rest of us. Yet, she is soooo nice that it is hard to stay mad at her.

Jimmy and the Slickster have joined forces to start a "moderate" Baptist movement. Well, they both sure knew how to compromise. I must ask what is their ultimate goals. Of course that would depend on what the definition of "is" is, wouldn't it?

I remember the Carter presidency. I consider it mostly a failure, for reasons outside Carter's control. The Iran hostage situation and the failed rescue attempt, accompanied by bad economic times at home, just torpedoed Carter. Yet Carter is and was a devout man, a born-again Southern Baptist who was unafraid to speak about the gospel to the foreign leaders he met, and who has done much good since the end of his presidency.

Always remember that Jimmy the C was the one who revealed our "Stealth" technology to our enemies, and he did it strictly for political purposes, a feeble attempt to increase his own poll numbers in a completely failed administration.
Of course Slick Willie gave the Chinese Communists the necessary technology to miniaturize nuclear weapons as well as the ability to target specific points with the missiles carrying them.
So, to all the people who have stated they support either of these jerks in any way, just remember that with ex-presidents like these, we really do not need enemies....

Why would you still vote for a felon (lied under oath) who last time was in office was having sex with his young secretary on the job and also is known for other adulteress affairs?
Because he is a Democrat, and voting Democrat is the most effective way so advance the political agendas that I would like to support. For the purposes of policymaking, it doesn't matter to me if he is a drunkard and a blasphemer, so long as he does what I want him to do while in office.
Of course, if there were another Democratic alternative, then I'd take that person over Clinton. I suppose what I'm saying is that I wouldn't vote Republican simply to satisfy a morality requirement. In fact, about the only thing that would make me vote Republican is if the other guy was a Muslim.

I do as well to an extent. But not for arrogant purposes. I cannot relate to you how well I believe Tony Blair or Parliament to be doing, at least not from a perspective that understands British culture and a modern British worldview. Neither can you look at our country from the perspective of an American citizen with a complete grasp of our worldview. We each have our lenes and are different on many levels.
Thats not saying I'll prohibit you from praise or critique, but I am less apt to be influenced by your opinion than I am that of an American.

I can see where Carter would like to see Baptist unity and I am still idealistic enough to applaud that desire, but this being initiated by him and Clinton at this time, definitely seems to be a ploy to entice conservatives to support Democrats in the next presidential election.
I honestly believe that Carter is thinking about a revised "covenant" that was used universally by Baptists (primarily Southern Baptists) that used to be posted on walls and in hymnals decades ago.
