How do fellow baptists feel about the church withdrawing Christian fellowship from a member based on assumptions? How common is it?
Also, I'm interested in knowing how common it is for one person and/or family (other than the pastor & his) running things and monopolizing or politicing within the church and what kind of problems this has caused and how it was handled. Any info, will be greatful. Thanks.

Never have I thought about that
But people do indeed do that unfortunately
And sadly because they want to feel "comfortable"
With other religions or worse, the occult.

Church leadership shouldn't be assuming. That is why there is suppose to be multiple witnesses. If you're assuming that means you don't have any.

From what I have seen it is fairly common. The problem I have seen most off is that the rest of the congregation walks around on egg shells all the time. Doesn't make for a good family atmosphere! I am not sure these types of people handle well.

Our church has withdrawn fellowship with the former pastor and the secretary. This was not based upon assumption but evedence presented. I know some people left the church because they thought the decision was based on assumptions. But the reality was, it was a six month process involving a lot of counsel. The whole thing was done very Biblically. It was a very sad time for our church. But we have a new pastor now and God is blessing us with new members.

that sounds like my church! (concerning the pastor and his wife running the church)
but, there are a lot of people who are 'key elements', without them, our church wouldn't operate correctly..

While many Baptist churches today do not practice valid scriptural church discipline, it would be wrong for a church to exercise church discipline against "a member based on assumptions."

Sadly we went through this too.
Everything was by the book on the problems we were having with one of our pastors, in the end he choose to resign rather then face the whole membership in council, there were no assumptions. (But we too lost members because it was their believe it was based on assumptions)
