My husband & I have been through a very rough time with churches. We've been to almost all denominations mostly non-denom, AOG, even Mennonite. A lot of the churches frown upon you listening to secular music & reading seclular books & watching an occasional horror movie (they say spirits can get in). Anyhow, we were this close to never going to another church again when I read about the Lutheran church on this site the other day. We're going to a service locally on Sunday & was wondering if we'll come across any of this. Please let me know if any of you read secular books & listen to secular music. I don't want to feel like I'm compromising but I don't want to feel like I'm in prison.

Hi Sage.
I can say with all confidence that you are highly unlikely to encounter that kind of attitude in an ELCA congregation. The ELCA has an uncompromising attitude toward preaching the Gospel, but we have very little concern about secular movies, books and music.
Like yourself, I enjoy an occasional horror flick, though the latest batch of hack-em-up stomach turners aren't really to my taste.
I pray that you will be blessed by your experience of ELCA worship.

It's very unlikely at an ELCA church. I mean, you will get a wide range of people at any church, so there will undoubtably be some people that think you shouldn't do this or that, but for the most part ELCA members (and most clergy) are not affraid of secular music and horror movies (though, there are many that encourage Christian music and such things).

I go to an ELCA church and I listen to "secular" music, read "secular" books and watch "secular" movies and TV shows. I'm not much of a fan of horror movies but it's not a religious issue, I just don't like them. I seriously doubt it would be anything of an issue.
:) I'm sorry that someone has actually made it an issue for you in the past. I hope you feel very welcome and accepted at the ELCA church you visit.
