This book is next on my reading list. It'd be cool if some people wanted to read it with me and then discuss it, or if anyone has already read it we could discuss it after I've read it.

I know Graham Greene is probably the most controversial of modern Catholic novelists, but personally I find his complex, dark portrayal of the Catholics in his novels fascinating. I've read two and I'm definitely a fan.

The Power and the Glory is often hailed as his greatest work, and his most optimistic (or should that be least pessimistic :P ). It's set in 1930's Mexico, during the persecution of the Church by the anticlerical, communist government, and follows the story of a priest during this time.

So, anyone interested?

Well, I haven't read anything by Graham Greene yet, but many friends have recommended his work, so maybe I should give it a try. I am certainly in favour of [open] threads for literary discussions; the other books discussed in this subforum are mainly catholic, right? As interesting as they can be, they are not the ones I'd like to discuss. Just "regular" literary fiction.

Yeah, open threads are a good idea. Might have been a good idea to put this in the main forum too so that more people would see it.

I'm working my way through the Graham Greene cannon at the moment. I actually read The Power and the Glory a few months back, and it's well worth the read. :)

I think it would get more views in the regular OBOB forum - proof: I didn't see it here (because I didn't expect literary threads here - also because I don't frequent this subforum).

I just had a look at my books, and to my shock I discovered that we own only one book by Greene, and not even a well-known one, "Monsignor Quixote". Sigh. That's a bad idea because I've never even finished Cervantes' Don Quixote.

Could I please join in with the reading? :) I read the book years ago when I was a tiny person but have forgotten everything about it. It would probably take me a while though, as I'm a lazy student.

Sure! Not too sure how many people are reading it though ( I already read it, this thread is old!) - and I don't wanna steal the thunder from the book club we got going.
