No one sews a patch of new material on an old garment..if he does, the new piece will pull from the old and make the tear worse...No one pours new wine into old wine skins or it will be ruined//he pours new wine into a new wine skin.. The question about fasting was asked and that was the reply....

do you have a link for the original conversation?
just my own thought, it might be best to pm that person and ask them to help you more about what they mean by it. it is also helpful to get more than one person's perspective, but asking the original person who said it also can be helpful. just ask nicely :)

No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins. The life and work of Jesus is the "new". According to Jesus when the old tries to contain the new - things tear, leak and spoil. Perhaps the reason we struggle to discern Jesus in our own life and the life of our church is because we try to contain Him in "old garments and wineskins". We can ruin the presence of Jesus in ourselves and for those around us unless we are made new.

I don't know. You asked what the scripture means and I told you. If there is a different meaning, then you must go back to the person that told you that.

The time to fast is when you don't have the answer.
John's disciples & the pharisees were still without the answer, Jesus disciples had it (Him).

Great answer. I would add, that one can also draw the comparison to our old nature vs the new nature required to contain the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Regarding the "fasting", I would say that he gave this answer to the question to demonstrate that His disciples were "new", and that they no longer needed to fast in accordance with the "old law".

16 No one puts a patch of 1 (http://online.recoveryversion.org/FootNotes.asp?FNtsID=355)unfulled cloth on an 2 (http://online.recoveryversion.org/FootNotes.asp?FNtsID=356)old garment, for that which fills it up pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear is made.
