And I couldn't believe my eyes nor my ears. The preacher was saying "I AM the alpha and omega, the first and the last" (or it might have been another quote with "I AM" in it) after/before speaking in "tongues" , of course he probably thinks that God is saying this through him, I couldn't believe my eyes.

I would assume that he was quoting scripture in what he was saying. Do you remember what pastor/preacher you were watching and the context of what he was saying?
Hard to judge without knowing more.

I'm pretty sure he was preaching the prosperity gospel, then speaking in tongues, then saying this, it was pretty out of order.

Sounds like Benny Hinn or Copeland to me. Both have stated they are gods or little messiahs. Sickening. And people follow these false teachers.
Usually with tongues comes interpretations. I wonder if he was interpretting it for himself? Weird.

Oh, this isn't the worst. Just the other day I happened to accidentally turn to TBN, only to see a preacher drive the point that people are incapable of praising God unless they are financially prosperous.
But here is a thought for you Richard. Consider how you discern falsehood when you hear these TV preachers. And then consider the fact that this is exactly how many of us view your church when your pastors preach geocentrism.

Yeah, I heard Copeland one time say that we all can be just like God exactly. That when he reads the passage in Exodus where God says "IAM that IAM" he (Copeland) says to himself, "Yeah, IAM too!" One of the most sickening quotes I've ever heard from a pastor frankly. I don't remember the exact quote either to be able to quote it here, but there's no doubt that he was claiming deity, not just making some weird statement ...

My local Christian channel also has mostly tongues and prosperity preaching, though I can on rare occasion catch Charles Stanley or D, James Kennedy. Actually, they mostly have reruns of old TV shows. I watch the Rifleman, Little House on the Prairie The Lone Ranger and The Cosby Show.

I'm not sure what's worse - a preacher using the "I AM" out of context or someone using it in a non-religious setting. Last year Reebok ran the following ad on t.v. for their hockey equipment.
