View Full Version : Going to a new church this Sunday

My hubby and I have been going to a small church for about a month and a half now, but are going to start going to a differant church. I will explain my reasons because I greatly value ya'lls opinions and would like to know what you would do.

These are very minor reasons, but just thought I would bring them up. :) The song leaders can not carry a tune in a bucket, I mean it is really bad, dogs would howl. I can't sing either, that's why I'm not in the choir. Then, the pastor is boooring, he used to be a lawyer so he always sounds like he's preparing a case, so I end up flipping through my Bible to keep from  .

Then yesterday (this is really why we're leaving) he approached me and my dh, Robert, and struck up a conversation.
Pastor: So, ya'll still living in the same place?
Hubby: Yeah, but we've got a little one on the way, so-
Pastor, turning to the guy behind us: That's nice. Hi, Jim. How was your week?

:sigh: It made me and hubby feel like he just came over cause its his job. So, I think this week we're going to go to the church I used to go to, but hubby's already fussing about it. It feels they're impersonal and no one cares about you. Funny, I see that more with small churches than big churches...

Anyways, thanks for letting me vent. :)

Ha!! I can't sing either. :)

Just from what you've said, if I were you I'd consider other churches too. It doesn't sound like it's the place for you. Especially since you haven't been going there for very long, what can it hurt?

I hope you find the church home you are looking for!

Pray, pray, pray. The Lord will guide you Husband to lead you to the right church. It is your husband's responsibility as Spiritual Leader of the household. Be sure you submit to his authority that was given to him by the Lord. Not to sound old fashioned, but Biblical. I don't mean it in the wrong way.

But, most importantly, pray, pray, pray. You haven't been going there long. It is always a good idea to visit a church 3-4 times before making a decision. Then, you get the feel of it and you'll be able to tell if this is the one the Lord has in store for you.

Good luck and God Bless!

Thank you both. :) I think if hubby gives this large church a chance he'll really like it, but if he doesn't we'll keep looking. There are plenty of churches around here so I'm sure God will help us find the right one.

That's good that there is a "big selection" (if you will) of churches . . . I think. Or maybe that would make it more confusing. I live in a rather small town with only two Baptist churches, and besides those two the next closest Baptist church is about 25 miles away. And the other Baptist church in my town is the larger of the two and quite liberal (I think I've mentioned this before in other posts) with more of a contemporary focus, so naturally we picked the smaller one. I knew right away it was the place for us, and I'm SOOOOO glad it's worked out that way or I'm not sure what we would have done. I'm confident you'll find your church home too, and like DiscipleOfIAm said, definitely pray!!

When we look for a church we consider two things (and others but these are important to us)

1. the teaching must be biblical
2. it should be a place where we can be fed/served but also serve

Remember, all churches are filled with imperfect people...just like me. :D

I disagree. When we look for a church we seek the Lord's guidance only. We are not to attend church for ourselves. That's consumerism. We are to go to church because He commands it and we are to go for His purpose, not ours. If you don't like the music and/or something else, but the Lord has led you there, sorry, but you're stuck! The Lord will take care of the rest as long you follow His lead. He won't lead you to a non-biblical church that will not "feed" you.

Remember, it ain't about you!

Perhaps I should have been more clear.

1. I said my Amen to quoted post because I agree with everything in it...especially the praying. He most certainly will lead us...and if you feel "stuck" take a step back and pray some more because something isn't right (sometimes its you and sometimes its them, He will let you know).

2. Sadly, there are many churches that are not biblical, how do you, check them out and compare what they do/teah/etc against the Bible. Are you, lead there to help the change to glorify Him, maybe...pray about it.

3. It isn't about me. That's why I made it a point to mention being able to serve. However, sometimes we need to defer and let someone else serve us. We don't want to hog all the blessings now do we? ;)

God bless

I see what you're saying, but the Bible (Paul in particular) also teaches that we're to be discerning in spiritual matters. I take that to mean we're to use good judgment in conjunction with prayer. And I think sometimes you just know if it's a good fit or not, i.e. Biblical teaching.

It sounds like you're doing the right thing because that church doesn't seem to be the place for you. Pray to Lord and ask his guidance on where to attend church. I wish you luck and I'll pray for ya'll as well. :)

Thank you all again. :) I'm really glad I found this forum, ya'll are such a big help! I will keep you posted. Tomorrow night I'm going to go to their Bible study (the bigger churches) and see how it fits, since I don't know their new pastor. The former pastor recently passed away at 87 years old.

I kinda wonder if the pastor is in the habit of doing that or if he was just having a very hard day? It is his job, by the way, to speak to congregation members. He should do his best to be available to everyone.
I hope you find a church you like. We moved here a few months ago and still haven't found a church home.

I agree. But, to cut someone off in mid sentence is rude no matter who you are.

Yes, it is rude. Your right. I don't know if I would give up on a church just for that though. If you don't feel like your being spiritual fed then maybe it wasn't the right church for you all along?

No, we don't feel like we're being fed, but I think its because he is soo boring its hard to pay attention (especially for me).
