Since I'm new to the Lutheran Church and want to know all about it, I was wondering what would be a good list of books to get started with. I'm studying through the Small Catechism right now, but I'm also wanting books on Lutheran church history, theology, biblical interpretation, and other good study resources that will help me get up to speed on the church.
A good Lutheran bible commentary set might be on the list as well.
Thanks

there are a lot of quality books out about Luther and his life & ideas -- you can also find books with Luther's sermons, thesis, etc that are very interesting to read

I do most of my reading online.
These should keep you busy for awhile:
Project Wittenberg (http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/wittenberg/wittenberg-home.html)
Works by Martin Luther (http://www.ccel.org/l/luther/?show=worksBy)
If CCEL asks you to join, don't worry, it is free, and the Christian Classics Ethereal Library is an AMAZING resource!!!
Lutheran Theology Web Site (http://www.angelfire.com/ny4/djw/lutherantheology.html)

Another helpful book might be "Why I am a Lutheran" by Daniel Preus. It's short (about 150 pages) and a really good statement of the heart of Lutheran theology.

Are you looking at the Self-Study CD that has the Self-Study Commentary and the Self Study NIV and notes, or are you looking at the Theological Library?

Anything by Martin Chemnitz,
Christian Dogmatics by F. Pieper,
Luther's Sermons (many are found online)
lastly and not leastly but usually most difficult-
try to find a few others (with flesh and blood) who also are interested
in digging into the Lutheran teachings.

What's better than a book list is a source of books. Sounds like a play on words, but it isnt. Simply look up the local church and inquire about their church library. You may not be able to take the books home. After all, some of them are quite expensive. Still, you can read there as well as anywhere else! You know, just for general sound Christian theology, C.S.Lewis can't be beat either. He was in the Church of England (or Episcopalian here in the US) but no one's perfect.;)

I am disappointed in the Concordia self-study bible because they used the inferior and heavily slanted Reformed NIV translation. Thankfully, CPH is working on the new one which will use the ESV instead. The revision work on the SE of Concordia has set the work back a bit, but Rev Paul McCain has told me it will be available sometime in 2008.

Don't want no reformed monikers here. THe EO and the RCC think we are reformed allready. Actually in the LCMS they might be right pretty soon anyway..

The LC-MS may have one foot in, testing the waters, but the WELS has practically jumped in eyes wide open, embracing all sorts of MethoBaptiCostalism and reformed theology.

I say that's rediculous! Not sure where he's been to a WELS church, but that sure ain't happening in WI.

Please try not to make such blanket statements as to start something right off the bat as a newbie. :)
