I'm stuck until January 6th with this and CDs... yay..?

My daughter is in her school choir, and of course she will be singing christmas songs.

Her choir teacher asked everyone what they will be doing for christmas. My daughter responded that she will not be celebrateing christmas but that she will be observeing hanukkah.

So now, the teacher has added Hanukkah songs to this years christmas play for the school!

I used to decorate my office for Chanukah and would play my Reggae Chanukah CD louder than I would have normally listened to it, just to drown out the christmas music. Actually got a few people hooked on the groove. :D

You just hit a nerve with me. I can not stand Christmas songs. And what makes it worse is it gets stuck in my head and I find myself humming the songs long after I have left the store. AAAAAAGGGGHHHH is right!

:timidly raises hand: can I ask a question?

If the song is a hymn and is not the secular santa type do you guys still find it offensive? I understand the desire to celebrate things in their right time and that Dec 25 is not really when Jesus was born- but are the joyful sentiments of His birth ever "out of season"? For example... a song with lyrics like "Oh Holy Night" - Not jingle bell rock;) I'm honestly curious and wanting to hear MJ pov's. Not wishing to spark debate.

Well this past Sukkot we had one night of singing christmas carols - just for the folks that (still?) love christmas songs. Only one I really like is Oh Come Emmanuel... (and ransom captive Israel, who mourns in lonely excile here, until the son of G-d doth appear....)

Unfortuantely many of the christmas songs promote an inaccurate picture of Messiah's birth. And then there are songs like "Come on Ring those Bells!" ...'light the christmas tree, Jesus we remember this your birthday..." YIKES!

actually, for me, I would rather hear , when I don't have a choice, in a public place, songs of love and joy, even timely misplaced and mis conceptualitzed than the horrid rock that I hear most times of the year.

I went shopping after sundown after Shabbat, and went to the Salvation Army. I find a lot of vintage cool things there that I alter to fit my style. :) anyway, I was poking through the racks and trying to ignore the hard rock coming out of the speakers, which got louder and louder the further down the isle I went.

I was ready to reach into my purse and look for my case of earplugs when they went to a commercial.

And I heard G-d meantioned, and I listened and I heard Jesus mentioned, . they were talking about music, but I then realized it was a commercial, but I'm thinking, what station would have that kind of commercial on????

So I waited and then when the noise, Ermmmmmmm, music came back on, inbetween the twanging guitars and loud bass and beating drums I caught a word or two, about Salvation.

Found out later it was a Christian station they had on because their satellite was out or something.

I found it pretty sad that me , as a believer all my life didn't recognize a song about my Savior, or even that he was in any way connected to that sound until I heard the speaking of the commercial. :(

My oldest kids love listening to this intense Christian rock stuff that just gives me a headache... The videos that go along with these songs can be really good though... but some of them are just beyond me. I'd rather listen to Christmas songs! lol

I was at the mall this morning and Christmas songs were on in nearly every store I went in to. I didn't really even think about it until you all were talking about it... I guess I was tuning them out.

Nah don't be so timid step right up we are not monsters regardless of what you have heard!

From my POV I would say you know you are right except to say that what has happened is that the whole thing is so awash in comercial non sense as to have completely washed away any significant spiritual good that was possible from it. And these great hymns and they turely are great are just used as one more tool to feed the maddening comercial hog fest we call Christmas.

To be honest, some of the hymns - are really great and I do love them... Like the one Wags mentioned, I love it to death -- "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" -- and I love Handel's Messiah... Every time I hear it, I feel in awe of what voices can do to praise Him and I know, I can do that, but why don't I? (Plain answer: the time of year it's done and the signifigance of that is why I don't)

There are other songs I like, but many I do not because of the misconceptions and misappropriations of Messiah or the secular influence within them..

I used to be in choir, but since moving outside of certain things, there is no choir and I guess in some ways my voice has gone into disuse. :sorry:

I think it would be any that paint Christmas as the date of His birth. Also, any that have Him being placed in a barn and horse trough (or anything similar) and surrounded by barnyard animals.

I don't know about the other two but Jessica Simpson was raised in the church. I saw a bio of her and she wanted to devote her life to singing for Jesus. However, her publicity people (along with her producer dad) convinced her that "sexing" things up would help her. :(

Ones that I like

Mary did you know - and I sing it all year long (ok so he name wasn't Mary)
Oh Holy Night (because my wife likes it and when Momma is happy everybody is happy)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/antsinmypants/Emoticons/laughing/4.gif P_G some of the family favs of the seculars:

"I'm A Christmas tree" (The one done on Dr. Demento's show that then digresses into "I'm a HANUKKAH BUSH... I'M a HANUKKAH BUSH.... I’ve got , I mean I’m a lot like a Jewish Christmas tree !"

And those that are like the 12 super stressed out days of christmas... anything Weird Al related to Christmas... the Grandma got run over by a reindeer... ;) (that used to make my sister cry. . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/antsinmypants/Emoticons/laughing/giggle2.gif)

But seriously though, my family adopted 3 Kings day for gifts when we lived in Spain and are trying to keep "Christ in Christmas" - - me, I gave up a long time ago and swapped over to Sukkot and Chanukkah (sans gifts).

I prefer scripture songs myself, but nothing tops Handel's Messiah http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/antsinmypants/Emoticons/gestures/blink17.gif

Have to admit I do like some of Bob Rivers Twisted Radio Christmas stuff - I find it amusing but wouldn't want to listen to it non-stop. (I like to sing his versions when I hear the correct ones - really confuses people!)

Some "christmas" music should really be labeled "winter music" like "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" (and if you are a Bob Rivers fan you know his version of it - LOL!!!) Jingle Bells etc...

One of the songs I've heard sung in a few churches has a chorus that goes "come on ring those bells, light the christmas tree, Jesus we remember this your birthday..." That is just wrong on so many levels. Anything else that plays fast and loose with it being his actual birth or the other details. Sort of like the manger scenes that have the shepards and wisemen all together.

My all time favorite christmas song is Elvis' "Blue Christmas" :) Not as good as "Blue Hawaii" - but it will do.

One that makes me cry for many reasons is Willie Nelsons, Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue............

Crowded street, busy feet hustle by him
Downtown shoppers, Christmas is nigh
There he sits all alone on the sidewalk
Hoping that you won’t pass him by

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Should you stop?, better not, much too busy
You’re in a hurry, my how time does fly
In the distance the ringing of laughter
And in the midst of the laughter he cries

Sad that it makes homeless people feel more homeless and unloved than any other time of year

This is just my opinion. The problem with the Christmas songs is that they are all blended together; witch is the foundation of the whole Christmas thing.
Christmas was created to bring into the Church, sun-god worshipers, in order to get them converted.
25 of December - (birth of the sun-god mithra, Sunday was kept holy in honor of Mithra,) http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10402a.htm (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10402a.htm)

These days were not just randomly picked, but were deliberately picked.

Santy Claus-(elves /elf wore green & red, long white beard with magical powers}.

Christmas tree: Jer 10:3-4.

So to keep with this tradition of blending Christianity with Pagan “things”. It’s the same with “Christmas” songs, you’ll hear O-Holy night, and then here comes Santy-Claus. It’s the blending, mixing together. That is why I personal don’t like Christmas or Christmas songs. It’s not a popular opinion this time of year.
