For those of you whose party lost in the recent national and state elections, after a couple of weeks, do you see this as a possible blessing for Christians like I do? I mean, while my party was in power, I looked to Washington to "back me up" on my values, and in a sense, to affirm my beliefs. Yet, why did I really need politicians to tell me what I believed was right when God already said so? Could we Christians as a whole have gotten so obsessed with seeing our beliefs legislated that we lost sense of what the main purpose of our time remaining on Earth was about: seeing souls saved? Sometimes I think that a liberal takeover of the government for several years may be just what Bible believing Christians need to get back to Kingdom business. After all, the Great Commission doesn't tell us to "go ye out and Republicanize the world, baptising them in the name of Rush Limbaugh, lower taxes, and gay marriage amendments". Ok, I'm being slightly facetious, but with my party out of power, I for one, have no reason not to look to Heaven a little more than the corridors of power "inside the beltway". Is anyone else here willing to see the glass as half full rather than completely shattered?

Well I'm a Democrat, so I'll obviously be a bit happy about the election results (though I wouldn't call either of the parties a blessing). But I agree with you that many Christians seem to have become more focused on politics than religion. I am glad to see that according to polls of evangelicals, people are starting to believe that Christianity has been too closely associated with the Republican party. As you say, hopefully many evangelicals will get back to Kingdom business.

I don't think it would be a good idea to legislate beliefs, on the other hand I don't want rampant immorality legislated either. It just seems like some things are so clearly right or wrong, you know what I mean?
Where do you turn? Only to God. I think depending on, or putting our trust in politicians only sets us up for disappointment. At the same time I think God wants us to be politically responsible and help elect Godly leaders. I guess after we've done that we need to hold their feet to the fire as best we can and trust in God to do His will.
I usually feel very led by the Holy Spirit to participate and He directs my choices. This time there was no direction or call to participate. Maybe God was sending a wake up call to some of those running for office?
I don't know, but I feel more called to get involed in the next election. I hope we have more to choose from next time.

I don't think either political party speaks for God - there are things about both the Republican and Democratic agendas that line up with Scripture, and things about each party that do not. That being said, I feel like American Christians tend to pray more in general for our nation, our leadership, etc. when the majority of people in power are Democrats. So...whatever gets people praying is good, I guess :o).

From a religious perspective, no, but from a political one, I believe it's a blessing in disguise.
The Republicans didn't lose this election because President Bush isn't popular. We didn't lose it because of the war.
We lost because we've gotten too far away from everything we learned from President Reagan.
When we get back to being the party of decentralized government, the party of reduced spending, of tax cuts, of strong foreign policy, and we're able to articulate those views with some authority then we'll start winning again.

I have to disagree here.
When we get back to letting God run the world and leave the things of the world to those in the world everyone will be better off.
God's will was done. Amen.
God Bless.

When has God ever not run the world?
Remember, the OP asked specifically about our political parties.
Notice also that I specified in my post, "not from a religious perspective, but a political one".

I agree. That said, I would like to see a ban on gay marriage. And I also think that abortion must be banned (this, in my opinion, is a much larger issue than gay marriage). Aside from these two major issues, I don't see any need for us Christians to legislate our beliefs. Because the Gospel stands apart from false religions as the only truth, it does not need to be legally enforced.

Amen on all points.
The only thing I would add (after giving this some thought) is our right to "believe" needs to be protected and preserved. This nation was founded on Christ and that should never be hidden away or taken out of our history books. Nor should our right to choose to be believers and express our faith ever be minimized or infringed upon.
