View Full Version : What Bible Version?

What Bible version should I use? I know the Orthodox Church officially uses only the original Greek, but what about for those who don't speak Greek? I know there are Orthodox study Bibles and Orthodox New Testaments, but there is no Orthodox bookstore in my town (just a Catholic one) so I can't get any. I have a Douay-Rheims Bible. This is a Catholic translation of the Bible, translated directly from the Latin Vulgate, and I've been told that it is the best English translation around. I also have a King James Bible around somewhere. The King James is a Protestant translation (but it's what our Church uses for Psalms 104 and 140 at Vespers) and I've been told it contains over 400 errors. I also have a Catholic Youth Bible, which is NRSV, and a Westminster New Testament.

Which of these should I use? Which is the most Orthodox?

My priest recommends the RSV for home use.

How about an Orthodox study bible? (MKJV)

RSV with Deuterocanonicals. I use the Oxford Anotated Edition of the RSV w/ Deuterocanonicals. It is a little hard to find (unless you go on ebay), but it is a good translation.

What about the Douay-Rheims? What is the Orthodox view of it?
