I am starting this htread because a recent thread on this forum sparked my curiosity and I wanted to givethis topic it's own space.

There seem to be some people who attend church because they want to, perhaps because they enjoy it or because they can see their friends while there, or be inspired etc
Then there are some who do it only because they say they are commanded or told to.......

I am of the first group.

I had a converstaion with a friend last Spring (Yes I have a few friends) and he said he goes to church every sunday because "that is how we are commanded to worhip" It seems that he does not really like it, so I wonder how much spirit and love he has in it if it is something he does out of obligation, not choice? or perhaps he is choosing to do it out of obligation.....?

I once told someone about something really beautiful I had experienced at a Christmas Eve service at a certain church. His response was "That sounds nice I wish I could worship that way" When I pointed out to him that it was open to anyone, his response was "Oh no I can't go off and worship like that when I want to...my church would not allow that" It seemed, after further conversation, that he worshipped where he did and ONLY where he did because he believed that he was "commanded" both by congregation and Bible to worship in that way, and that way only! Sure, he did not like it, (he more or less admitted that) but he did it because it was the "Right thing to do."

As for going to worship, I go where the Spirit leads me and where the inspiration lives through me.

I may be at an Episcopal church one week, catholic the next, at a Bhuddist gathering on Monday, a drum circle on Saturday, a non denominational service on Wednesday, I might go to a traditional service on week and a contemporary the next ! People in town and nearby are used to seeing me show up at various times ...and they probably think "there's that $&$^@ again" no LOL JK :D No they know how my spiritual life is, they know that I place spirituality way above religion, in fact, they know that I am not really religious at all......So they are used to seeing me in and out when I am so directed to be there......

I know a lot of people around here stayed away from church because of negative experiences until one of the local baptist churches started a contempoarry service, complete with Rock music and dancing and a very informal structure...now they get 200 to 300 a week that go becasue they like it, and that means 200 -300 people inspired to live better and do better as a result. At least we hope. I have been there and believe me, those people are not going out of obligation.....
(If you own a Harley you'd fit in, ok?) Not the kind of crowd you would pen as Christian but at the same time, the kind of people that Jesus would stand beside and bless if he were here.....

But let me here some more of what you guys do and believe and think......PLEASE !!!
Do you go because you want to, or because you are fulfilling an obligation?
THANKS

I USED to go because I felt like I HAD to go. But then I matured and realized that I should go because I WANT to...not being forced too. There is more than church for fellowship.

I think if you go to church because "God commanded it" then it's really a mask you've placed over yourself....you'll go to church and put on the happy, content appearance. But it pales in comparison to someone who actually wants to go.

People can tell when you are only going because you feel like you have to and when you genuinely in your own heart WANT to be there.

I go because I like it. I'm inspired to draw neerer to God throughout the week when I go. However, there are days when I go out of obligation because I teach a children's class. Once I am there however I am there doing the thing I do because I like it. I feel God wants us to be at church but church can be done in so many ways and that is great.

i don't go because i want to. i would go because i was told since it was a commandment i would go to hell if i didn't. also i'm confronted all the time about being spiritually unhealthy and not living a good christian life because i don't go to church. nothing could be farther from the truth. i think it's great if folks have found a good church. not everyone is that fortunate. if i'm going to go i want the whole package. not just pieces of it that leave me with nothing when i walk out the door. if i can't get anything out of it that's going to help me live better then i feel i'm wasting precious time that i could be spending directly with god. there simply is not enough god in a lot of the churches today. it's mostly the everything else. i'm there to learn about god. and i don't feel that fellowship is something that is restricted for church. if i want 40 min. of music i have cd's i can play. i need to be fed. i need scripture. i need knowledge. i just simply don't get that at church. and if it comes down to choosing between a roof over my head and church i'm gonna work. i can see god one on one anytime i want at home. i have more quality time with him in the quiet of my home where i can focus solely on him and listen when he speaks. :)

I personally go because I want to go. Yes there are times when I think about what I could be doing instead of going to church. But when I get there my spirits are uplifted and I'm in a much better mood. I think that if I felt "commanded" to go I would do it but for only a while. I do feel "obligated" to go but only in the sense that I feel obligated to worship God because of what He's done for me!

You should go to church expecting a blessing when you walk through the doors... praise God for the things He does ... even the small and seemingly insignificant things... if you don't have something to praise God for every day then you need to do some looking and see what all He's done.

I enjoy giving God praise and worship anywhere.

Where ever my LORD is (which is everywhere) that is where my Heart, Praise and Home is.

Blessings friends.

In general, it is spiritually healthy to go to church... you get to fellowship with other believers, worship together, and be fed from the word. But I would not say it is a requirement.
