Is the Archbishop there for life like the Pope, or will he get to retire and die in peace?

In recent years they've retired. God save us all Williams stays there until he dies - he's done a lot of good, but...

Does this mean you want him to stay , or you want him to retire at the usual age , or maybe even a bit before :crossrc: ?

To say as soon as possible would be harsh. I do really like him and have a huge ammount of respect for him as a theologian and spiritual leader. However he hasn't been a good Archbishop and i think it was about time for a change in direction. It's just a shame that we (the Catholic wing) have wasted our 'turn' at picking ABC. However a conservative evangelical would be so much better than the current liberal Catholic.

I was thinking about his book praying with Icons of Christ.
how is it?

I've read "Christ on Trial":
http://www.amazon.com/Christ-Trial-Gospel-Unsettles-Judgment/dp/080282496X/sr=8-10/qid=1162320136/ref=pd_bbs_10/102-1780856-3585764?ie=UTF8&s=books
It was okay. I might read another of his books if the topic is of interest to me, but otherwise, I won't seek him out. He makes good points and I agree with him a lot of the time, but his writing style is difficult to work through for a casual reader such as myself.

Wasn't bad. Not the most in depth book ever and you could it through in about an hour but it gets a couple of thoughts going. Some beautiful icons in there though!
Would make a great gift for someone though.

So this may sound like a stupid question, but does the ABC have to be from England? Can he (or she?) be from any country?
And does the Anglican communion have a house of bishops or something that does the choosing?
I can't believe I don't know this already. Sorry Im such an ignoramus here folks.

No, he doesn't have to be from England. In fact, the current one is from Wales.
And does the Anglican communion have a house of bishops or something that does the choosing? The ultimate decision is made by the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Crown Appointments Commission.

Ok, so to an American like me, England, Wales....same same.
How about outside of the UK?
The ultimate decision is made by the Prime Minister, on the recommendation of the Crown Appointments Commission.
So based on that, I would assume he must be from the British Isles.

I've read it, its a very small book and does not go into much detail, but I enjoyed reading it.
I've also read "Resurrection", which is a very good explanation of the easter gospel.

I think it's a terrible shame that it wasn't the other way around with York and Cantebury. Dr. Williams would've been a better ++York and Dr. Sentamu a better ++Cantebury IMO.

Oh man that would be awesome
Mind you I don't mind rowan williams that much - I don't envy that job, the pressure and diplomacy required must be a nightmare.

I've got (and partly read) a signed copy (I was almost first in queue at Greenbelt to get it signed) of Ponder these things.
I've read the first chapter of Lost Icons, and his short book on the desert fathers (the title escapes me). Oh, and the little book he wrote after 9-11.
We also have the Family Prayers book he co-authored.

I certainly wouldn't object to NT Wright as ++Cantuar, but I suspect he would get bogged down in the politics just as Rowan Williams has. Canterbury is looking more like a job that drains a good resource than one that makes best use of great bishop at the moment IMO.

Silence and Honey Cakes. I borrowed it from the library several months ago; skimmed through it, but didn't really have time to read it.
