I don't think the full context changes it. I say again: How do you think the writers of the Bible got their inspiration if not through "voices in their heads"?
Seriously, God talks to me (and has talked to believers throughout history) through many ways, the Bible, dreams, other people, things I see and read, as well as those voices. My point is that we shouldn't discount the fact that God CAN talk to us directly.

Well, that's how I take his post in the framing he put it in with the subject heretics & the Word just ahead of the sentence in question.

I'll let Mact speak for himself since he wrote it and would know better than I would.

But I do agree, we can & do hear from the Lord in our hearts, I know I have myself.
But as always, if I heard anything that didn't comply with what the Bible teaches (ie. principles, commands, etc.), then I'd scrap the thought immediately!

It won't let me give you any more rep just yet. lol

Good post.

Scripture should be our sounding board on all matters, anything that does not line up with Scripture should be discarded and discredited as soon as possibe.

The Bible - Required or Not?

Which do you think?

1) The Bible is required.

2) You don't have to have the Bible.

Both. Actually I think desired is better. Certainly it isn't the end all to have a Bible, but as one reads it, it adds such richeness to our experience and so much depth to our meditational life. At first it seems rather boring. However I have found it such a blessing as I think on the things of Christ and He brings me to recall then think on His written word.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

John 8:31-33
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Jesus is telling believers that truth is found in his teachings (ie. scriptures).
So often your conscience can lead you astray. You definately need scripture....

Very Good point, and I agree with you wholeheartedly, however I beleive that the Bible was needed by me early in my walk with GOD, just as a baby needs milk for nourishment. To me I have found that as you grow and begin to seek GOD in prayer, the revelations given sometimes conflict with what is being interpreted in institutional religion. And that is where the choice is made to either worship the Bible or GOD. I belelive that if I had not grown to the point of seeking and gaining a personal relationship with GOD, I would have been one of those that worshipped the Bible.

Scripture is a source for the Truth. Without it how do you know what God's will is? I still don't understand how people know God's character without the bible. I know He exists, but I need scripture to tell me his nature. I wouldn't call needing the bible worshiping it. It's God's way of revealing Himself. How would you have known about JESUS and/or his love without it?

"You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men;being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us,written not with ink,but with the Spirit of the living God,not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts". II Corinthians 3-2,3 NASB :)

How does one know it's the Holy Spirit talking and not another spirit. Do you verify whats in your head with what scripture teaches?

Test the Spirits

1 John 4:1

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

I am assuming John meant false teachers as well as spiritual voices. For me, the more I read, the more I can identify what is of God and what is not of God.

The times that God has spoken to me pretty much dorectly I have had NO TROUBLE identifying it. I just KNOW, no question about it.
But I would certainly question what I heard if it directly contradicted Bible teaching.

The key is knowing the Bible so you know what/when there were contradictions.

How does one know it's the Holy Spirit talking and not another spirit. Do you verify whats in your head with what scripture teaches? The fruits of the Spirit are love, peace, joy etc.

It's pretty obvious, especially if you've been fortunate to experience it yourself (I did long before I even read it in scripture, which I think is kinda cool), and it's also written.

I don't think it's really that hard. Perhaps most times when people can't figure out whether it's God or the devil, it's neither, but just their own minds?

You need the Bible and you need the Holy Spirit because they go hand in hand.
