The Desert Fathers

I saw that, while reading Kallistos Ware's "The Orthodox Way", he frequently refers to "The Desert Fathers" in many quotes. Is this a collection of sayings or a full book on them, or what ? I'm curious, I'd like to know more please.

ah, I love reading the fathers...

There are many books - some of which should only be read with guidance.
