Hi all,
Tuesday the 17th was not a good day for me. I went out to my truck to make sure I had everything I needed for work and I realized that sometime during the previous night someone had broken into my Jeep and stolen my backpack.
Anyway, the contents of the backpack contained my Thompson Chain Reference Bible NIV edition, Luther's Small Catechism and other assorted religious books.
Now to the topic of this post. I now need a new bible. I have been bouncing around various web pages looking, I really liked the Thompson Chain Reference system, but a bible I was also looking at at the time I bought that one was the Reformed Study bible edited by R.C. Sproul. I was wondering if this bible is in line with Lutheran theology or more in line with Calvinism. I'd like to go to the ESV as I already have an NASB, but the LCMS church I attend uses an NIV, which I'm not as fond of anymore since I prefer a more literal translation. Any suggestions on what I should get for my new bible? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

As the title (and author) suggests, it is Reformed (Calvinist) in it's outlook.
You could check out the Concordia Study Bible (http://www.cph.org/cphstore/category.asp?find_category=79997&find_description=Concordia%20Self-Study%20Bible&find_part%5Fdesc=). Sometime next year, I think they are planning an ESV edition as well.

Thank you for the information. I thought it might be Calvinistic, but ya never know for sure til ya ask! :-) The LCMS church I'm attending currently uses the NIV so I'm probably going to be forced to buy another NIV bible. LOL I do have an NASB bible too so I have access to a more literal translation.

I already have one bible the NASB Life Application bible. I bought that one because that was the translation the church I was attending at the time used. Earlier this year I bought the Thomposon-Chain Reference bible in NIV. That's the one that was stolen from me and I really liked it. It was my first thumb-indexed bible and it was great. Much easier than sitting at home putting the tabs on and hoping that they were on straight and were lined up correctly. LOL What a pain that was. LOL
The LCMS church I'm now attending uses the NIV, so I didn't have to buy a new bible when I started going there. That's always a bonus. LOL I listen to the Wrestling with the Basics podcast and they have switched from the NIV to the ESV, so since I like to read along with them when I listen to the program, I bought the Battlezone Bible ESV version yesterday.
Man that print is small. I'm gonna have to get stronger reading glasses. My +1.25 just aren't really helping that much! LOL
My dillema is this. I really liked the Thomspon Chain in NIV, but I see they have a software suite of that bible and that actually appeals to me more, because I can really search the bible more easily on my PC, rather than flipping through the bible pages, back and forth etc.
Now I've been considering the Concordia Self Study Bible in NIV, but if they release an ESV version which one should I get? I guess I should ask my church if they are going to switch translations any time soon. I"d hate to spend $80 for a new bible just to find that the church is going to the ESV sometime in the near future. I'd also like to see the Concordia Self Study bible in person and look at it a bit more thoroughly to see if I really want it. But none of my bookstores around here have a copy. Guess I'm just gonna have to have faith. Does anyone know of a website where I can see an excerpt of some pages from that bible? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here (http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/index.php?action=getVersionInfo&vid=47#booklist) is the full ESV.
It is also in audio, so you can listen to it while reading it.

Ask your pastor if he has a Concordia Self-study Bible that you could look at. Most of us have one... or two... lying around.

I did get a look inside the Concordia Self Study Bible. What I saw was the first page of the first chapter of Genesis. They managed to get like four or six verses on the page, the rest is study notes. I can't read a bible that only has a few verses on a page. I need a bible where it is more balanced.
I'm seriously considering the Archaeological Study Bible from Zondervan in the NIV. This seems to have the answers that I really want and information that I have not seen in other bibles. Non-belivers are always throwing questions at me from an archaelogical standpoint and asking me if I know this or that about how life was in the biblical times. Often times I did not. I feel this bible will help me if I ever find myself in that position of talking to a non-believer online again. It should happen much less now, since I am no longer the moderator of Christianity General at www.about.com (http://www.about.com). Boy, I don't miss that place! LOL
