If you on a the clock I believe you should be working and not doing personal things like read the Bible. If you want to be a witness you can do what I have and read the Bible or some other Christian book at your desk during your lunch hour. At that time your coworkers can ask you what your reading and you can be a witness. If your reading the Bible on company hours I believe people normally will view that as a bad witness instead of a good one. Now if your on the clock at a job where your boss says it is ok to read then go ahead and read the Bible, but only if all your other work has been done well.

Ethics discussion

Hypothetical situation:

John or Jane Doe work for “XYZ” company.

How should John or Jane purport themselves on the job?

Generally in most work places there are lost people.

John and Jane profess to be Christians.

John from time to time has idle time. He pulls out his Bible and reads.

Jane however sweeps up, ask for more responsibility, helps our in other areas and waits until break time to read here Bible.

Now this example of reading ones Bible as John is doing is could be the news paper, a novel, and many other things not company related.

Who is right and who is wrong?

In the form of a poll vote your convection.

I can't vote, as I don't think enough information has been presented.

What is the company policy on down time? Or if there's no policy, then management attitude?

And in all honesty, how could anyone construe Jane as stealing time?

without knowing more I would say neither.

I would agree that more information needs to be given and the choices that are given are not really the best choices to give in this case. No one is going to say Jane is stealing since there is no hint of it that I can tell and there isn't an option to say neither.

Agreed if you are on the clock
You should work and not do personal things
But off it, you shouldn't be touched and accused of
Stuff as the company can't touch you on the clock
But these days, it isn't like that at all in all place.
