An Every Day Type Circumstance (Business Related)

You have a “Business” XYZ Company. You offer services for a price. Your Overhead lets say is $2000.00 per month. You have to bring in from your services each month to pay your overhead (Business phone, Cell business phone, Computer and perhaps some form of internet service, Water, Electricity, Sewer, Garbage pickup, Annual Business Lic., Business Vehicle, gas, insurance for vehicle, building, and personal liability, monthly credit card machine expense, monthly banking fee, office supplies (ink, paper, etc.), Equipment, advertising, City, County, State Business Licenses, Regulatory security Licenses, annual mandatory educational CEUs, association fees, work uniforms, monthly sales tax, annual bulletins, and manuals, software, and more.

OK there you have it. You must make $2000.00 to pay these monthly bills. Now a person calls and they are crying elephant tears. You offer a service that they need and they are down and out and are expressing to you on the phone their plight. How much do you charge? I don’t have a lot of money? Crying all the while they are talking to you. I don’t know what I am going to do can you help me? I mom is dying, my husband left me, I can’t make ends meet, I don’t know what I am going to do can you help me?
Your normal fee for service is $100 but she had told you she only had $25.00.
While you are being ask to do this for this down and out lady in distress and without money to completely pay the normal amount. You get a call following this call to do a job that will pay 1
$1000.00 and are ask to come now. You are the only one offering the service so the lady in distress has now where to go. Except the nearest business offering the same service is miles and the cost is prohibitive.
You are a Christian? In a brief paragraph state what you would do. Don’t ask me question you create in your mind the possible real life situation and you solve the problem.
How will your actions effect you in the community?
If you decide to help in this hypothetical case how do you see it affecting your company?

Learn to live The 11th Commandment: "Thou shalt think dirty".

Matthew 10:16, "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."

Not that you should do "dirty" but that you recognize how the world thinks and acts and be prepared for it.

But what would you do personally. I am all for quoting scripture but in a real world situation what would you do.

I am faced with this type scenario often because I own a service business.

Folks that are not in business generally have a different take on what a business person should or should not do. They don't shoulder the real responsibility of running and keeping the business afloat.

Basically, if you could put yourself in this hypothetical situation what would you do personally?

Well, the first thing I see is that among the list of business expenditures there is nothing regarding employee payroll; in particular and most importantly, your own paycheck is conspicuously missing. Any business analyst will tell you to pay yourself-first. Just don't pay yourself so much the business falters. Most new businesses fail within the first two years and mismanagement is a huge reason and getting too greedy too soon is far from the bottom of the list.

Second, scripturally speaking, this is the 'real world' and if you and your means of income are not functioning properly you are in no postion to help anyone. The world always has had and always will have the poverty ridden and it is impossible for you (or anyone else) to think you can or even should be responsible for their well-being.

Presenting the Gospel, yes; helping beyond that is a cautious discretionary choice. You, your family, your church family in that order come first. The local social family follows.

Your business customers are another matter entirely. And that is where the 11th Commandment comes in. If you do tithe you might consider shuffling a percentage of that amount into a fund for purposes such as you describe. And then stick to that budget. If you have more people than the budget can cover then you must make hard choices based upon the advise of your trusted inner circle and prayer.

Another option might be to research the field and industry and assemble a list of alternative sources of income and aid you can refer these people to. This way you help both, your business and the customer.

I am in a service business as well and have faced similar cirumstances. I would inform the lady that I would help her out for what she can afford to pay, but inform her she would be worked in around the paying customer. These customers are happy to be serviced and sometimes it will lead to jobs that pay full price from others they know.

Great, I am the only employee, my pay is what is left at the end of the month less needs for new stock, tools, etc.

My particular business takes around 5 to 7 years to turn real profit. In a different setting and the capital it would happen much faster.

Three factors in my opinion why business go under. A passion to do something is not based in reality. That meaning (1) Lack of understanding of need vs. competition; (2) Lack of investment capital; (3) Lack of business sense - how to manage everything.

When dealing with the public you learn how different peoples respond, act, and pay. You are put into a real life situation where you learn to stereotype because of real life behavior of groups.

This also has a bearing on advertising and target of service. Method of payment becomes a serious variable when dealing with different groups.

But the question or point is helping someone who is in distress as my example illustrates. I have a working way to deal with it but I posed the question for discussion. Individuals handle things differently but when you are in business the same situation takes on a different perspective. What a person might think is good, just, and proper as a non-business person could, might and may very well be totally different. Perspective is the key word - seasoned by a clear mature understanding of God's word.

Good thoughtful responses thanks.
