Does anyone here attend a Baptist church where any of the women cover either for service or all the time? I recently started covering full time, and am the only one at my church that covers. I have been surprised with the positive reaction to it, having been raised in this church and taught that the covering should be the hair.

Different people have different takes on the scripture that's used for *coverings*. If you do a study back then women were shorning= shaving their heads. God give *hair* for their covering. :)

Other than some of the Anabaptist denominations (Mennonite, Amish, Brethren, Quaker), I don't know of any America denominations where the women routinely cover. I know that when I did some vacation-time mission work 20 years ago in Haiti the women covered. Not sure of the denomination of the mission... but I think it was Baptist-leaning in its doctrine. Some older women in the Roman Catholic and Episcopalian church routinely cover in church, but not all the time. I have prayerfully considered covering in my private worship, but have not yet felt a strong "push" one way or the other about it.

You may want to pose the question in the Anabaptist congregational forum. They may have more practical advice for you. I don't personally know any Christians who cover full-time who aren't Mennonite.

Many of us in the Orthodox church cover in church. Some also cover during prayer times at home, and a few cover all the time.

I usually cover in church, though sometimes I forget to bring my scarf.

I know it isn't a denominational thing. I was just wondering if there are any other baptists here that cover or have women in their church that do.

fifty years ago women not only wore a hat to church services, but wouldn't go outdoors with wearing a hat. That was the custom.

Consider the wearing of a head covering also a custom of the time and that particular church. The prostitutes had their heads shorn, and so the custom came to the fore,,cover your heads ladies, don't look like the prostitutes.

I saw the change coming as I pastored. The younger ladies did not wear hats or scarves, and the older ladies did....even that changed. I seldom see a head covering these days, even in the Anglican Church I attended.

I pastored in a resort area in the 50's and I remember a lady coming to me on Saturday asking if it was ok for her to come to church on Sunday without a hat. My answer was: "I don't care if you come in your bathing suit (remember, a resort area) just come. I might have been a little shocked had she actually come in bathing suit, but the principle was the same.

How does wearing a covering affect your worship? That is what counts. If YOU feel uncomfortable without a covering, wear a covering. Just don't make it a law. It coulc also be a point of pride...I'm wearing a covering and you're not!

Cheers,

Jim

Interesting. At my Baptist church, I have never seen a woman cover her head. I wonder what the reaction would be.

Sorry. I should have read more carefully. I didn't mean to butt in.

I hope that it is ok that I post here, if not, please forgive me.

I attend a Messianic Synagogue that is part of the Southern Baptist Convention. about half of our ladies cover at least for services and bible study, and a few of us cover full time.

In the Messianic side of this forum, there are many ladies who cover full or part time.

In many German Baptist congregations, women cover.

Principle to live by regarding covering:

The subject is food but the principle covers more than food.

Romans 14:22. The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23. But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because {his eating is} not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
