Why call it Calvinism as apposed to Predestination?

I believe you answered your own question. Can't you just hear the preacher now? Hey, all you sinners, some of you are chosen by God, even if you do not know it. But, the rest of you are not chosen. Sorry about that. Really a bummer, huh?

That God knows who will be saved and who will be lost, as it proven by the contents of the Book of Life, does not in any way equate with His proclaiming, predestinating or causing some to be saved and others lost. He leaves that up to each of us. All men are called, many want to be among the elect, but only a few will have the degree (read: quantity and quality) of developed faith for the Holy Spirit to indwell and impart God's grace to the believer.

Good question - The doctrines of grace that make up what is today known as "Calvinism" were origonally laid out in the Canons of Dort in apx 1619. You can read them for yourself here: http://calvin.canrc.org/resources/bop/candort/

Although Calvin undoubtedly believed in and taught the doctrines of grace he did not systematically lay them out like was done at Dort. The acronym TULIP comes from the Canons of Dort - not from Calvin.

This is why I say my Theology is based on the TULIP.

The central issue is sin, the "T". The focus of those that disagree is always on The "L".

The order is important.
