Hey yall. I was wondering if anyone would mind explaining submission to me. I mean, I know basically what it is, but I've been getting so many different definitions and I was wondering if someone could help explain it the way God meant for us to take it. Thank you!

Hi Iliad, and welcome. I'm not sure of your question. If you mean submission as a Christian, I believe the better term is humbleness. We should all strive to be humble throughout our daily lives, letting others see us as Christians rather than prideful humans.

However, if your question involves Christian submission to your future husband, I believe that simply means that you are to allow him to be the head of your family. You will still discuss things with him, and you will let your feelings be known on any subject. But, as a Christian wife, you should generally defer the final decisions to him.

Oh, (my tongue is now planted firmly in my cheek) and if you can sort of bite your tongue and not let out the "I told you so's" when he screws up he will be oh so happy!

Hope some of this helps....

I think God meant it best in Luke 14:33, "if a person does not forsake all they have, they cannot be My disciple."

I would even venture to say that having the willingness to forsake all we have is a good starter on the road to submission.

I agree with Matthan.

In the case of husband and wife, when you see it interpreted wrong it is very obvious.

If the husband holds submission over the wife's head, it is wrong.
If the wife, with a 'poor me' attitude, goes with what her husband decides, it is wrong.

Submission is wanting to be obedient above all else.

That says it, short and sweet. We all submit everyday. Everytime we stop for a red light or drive the proper speed limit, we are submitting to authority. What gets me is someone who has no problem kowtowing to a demanding, unreasonable boss, but refuse to submit to their loving husband who would give his life for her. This also applies to the bride of Christ.
If it's not done volutarily, it's not submission.

I agree with that.

Its a wrestling move in which you make the other person give up so you can win the match.

Most notebly is the Figure Four or the Scorpion Deathlock.

It was actually like a month ago, I was at Six Flags in ATL with the youth group I serve under and Deep South Wrestling was doing a thing there and He was the Main event. Stood in line for like 2 hours. Check out my myspace (link in profile) to see the pic of me and him.

I did mean it in terms of a woman to her husband. Sorry! I should have been a little more clear on that. I'm still a little confused though. I'm sorry!

It might help then if you ask specific questions. In general I can say that a woman's submission to her husband comes with instruction for the husband as well.

Looking at the passages concerning a wife's submission:

In Paul's letter to the believers at Ephesus he gives instruction as to how they should live.

The first instruction to submit is to each other. This gives me the idea of serving each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.
The next instruction is to submit to your husband. As to the Lord! Working backwards, verse 24 - 22
The wife is to be subject to the husband in everything. Just as the church is subject to Christ.
Christ is the Saviour of the body (church)
Christ is the head of the church
The husband is the head of the wife
But the toughest part of this whole passage is verse 25-33. The instruction given to men is the much tougher requirement. The woman is simply ehorted to honor and obey her husband whereas the man is exhorted to extend a Christ-like love towards his wife. Christ gave His life in His love for us.
In Paul's letter to the believers at Colosse he gives instructions again.
Paul gives a very similar instruction only much simpler.

Based on these passages I do not believe that biblical submission means the same as the dictionary definition.

Biblical submission is an act of love

Modern day submission is an act of weakness.

To me, submission means that I should above all else, submit to God's will first and foremost. We have Jesus' example for us to follow: Matt. 6:10, 26:39,42. Just to name a few. I must above all else submit my will to His will. Just as Jesus sought to do the Fathers will, and not His own, so must I.

That is what it means to me.

God Bless

Till all are one.
