I'm looking for a church that:

1) does not depend so heavily on me and my dh be financially responsible for its existence, or to head up its ministries, and one that does not have one-on-one talks with me and my dh about extra-biblical tithing and giving on a regular basis.

2)believes the gifts are for today, and operates in them.

3)does not believe in prosperity doctrines, i.e. is not hyper focused on wealth and health and whose leadership lives modestly

4)whose leadership is not afraid to speak out on political matters even if it means losing tax exempt status

5)whose leadership is anti death penalty and is not war-mongerish

6)whose leadership is anti-homosexuality and abortion, but is not hyper-focused on these issues

7)where the leadership is recognized to be bottom up as well as top down.

8)is preferably larger (at least 150 active members) and established

9)is racially diverse

10)is not involved in "church growth" movements

11)Believes in modest dress and does not endorse the abuse of alcohol, but which is not legalistic in this regard.

12)recognizes that some persons in the church need to be fed and ministered to, while others are in a position to feed and minister, that not everyone is in the exact same place spiritually.

12)recognizes that some members' ministry is their occupation or life outside the church, and does not demand cumbersome time commitments.

I think I'm asking too much.

I don't know of any Catholic parishes which don't meet your requirements.

Welcome to the Catholic Church! You can check out the nearest one at http://www.masstimes.org/dotnet/Default.aspx

Well, my father was raised as a Catholic in an extremely large Irish Catholic family, but he decided not remain a Catholic into adulthood, and decided against taking us to any church, ever, after his experiences which he will not discuss!

So, my mother raised me as a Protestant. I unfortunately don't know a great deal about the Catholic Church, but, from what I do know, I don't think I can accept certain of its doctrines, such as: transubstantiation, purgatory, praying to saints, immaculate conception, praying to Mary, Mary veneration (or is it worship?), and confessing to intermediary clerics.

I'm not trying to be pushy, but may I suggest you look into why we teach what we do, and where Protestant denominations come from? It's just that you're coming at this from an uncannily Catholic perspective. (It's not worship. And I suggest you read John 6:25-71) This website has questions and answers

Obviously, it's up to you where you decide to go.:) I hope that you end up in the right place for you and your relationship with God and His people.

What part of Ohio? I used to live in Columbus and know a couple of churches there that might meet your needs.

I am in just outside of Columbus. Thanks.

I used to worship at Broad Street Methodist Church in Columbus. It sounds like it might meet your most of your needs.

The church does support gay and lesbian equality, but isn't a gay church. I'd classify the abortion stand as in favor of life. However, abortion isn't something that ever came up during any of the services I attended.

Anyway, here is their website if you want to read more:

It looks like a fine church, but I cannot abide in a church where there is no acknowledgement of homosexual behavior as sinful. To be homosexual is not, but acting on it is akin to an alcoholic going off the wagon imho.

My problem is that I can't deal with the hypocrisy of the church on this issue (i.e. homosexual sin being held out as being greater than heterosexual sins), or the elevation of this homosexual sin as the "ultimate sin."

I don't want to turn this into a debate, though. Thank you.
