I can't breathe, I am so elated! I was listening to Hillsongs (still am) and was bouncing around like a madwoman and God blessed me with my own prayer language - the feeling is indescribable. My mum has spoken in tongues for years, but I thought that it would freak me out when/if I was given that ability, but it felt like the most natural thing in the world. I don't have a clue what I'm saying, mind...how do I know I am not just making it up?

Jesus is Lord and will come again!!!

Hi Swee,

Well, there is one thing that I found out about spiritual gifts, is that, the enemy will deceive us by copying them.

I had a number of things that happen to me, and when it began to happen too often, I then took it our Lord, and said to Him, "Lord if this is not of You, then I don't want it. Get out, in Jesus' Name!"

We can have those spiritual gifts, but also Satan will copy them, and he will deceive us.

Spiritual gifts of speaking in tongues is helpful when you don't know what to pray for.

I pray to our Lord many times when singing praise and worship, and I praise Him all the time in tongues.

But, as I said be very aware of the enemy. Be very careful of church doctrine in regards to tongues. Be patient with the gift, and be humble. Keep it to youself.

This is between our Lord Jesus CHrist and you.

I have an article I wrote some time ago on tongues, I'll see if I can find it, and post it later.

Love in CHrist

Thankyou. I read a little on it and believe it is our own private prayer language to be shared only between us and God rather than in public? I expect if it happens again it will be because God wants it to, I wouldn't even know how to do it. I'd love to read that article if you can find it. :)

Yes, this is very important too, as you say, satan himself will deceive us, so that is my next prayer, for Jesus to rebuke any 'gifts' that are not heaven sent to me. I feel like a baby animal, using all my senses for the first time. And it's all happening so fast - I always thought I believed in God, and that that was enough; but now I realise being a Christian is so much more, both in output and active relationship with God.

God bless x

Trust in the Holy Spirit & you will KNOW whether or not, you are making it up. I don't believe you are making it up. Tongues are still given, these days! Give every OUNCE of Glory to GOD! REJOICE!

That is so awesome. I have never talked in tongues before. When I was little I would go to worship services with my mom and would hear so many people speaking in tongues. I called the angel language. I wish I could feel that sometime.
Isn't the presence of the Lord so wonderful?

Hi Swee,

Yes, It is true that the devil will do everything in his power to discourage believers from moving in the Holy Spirit, and so often this comes by means of "good-intentioned" Christians who know not the voice of the Holy Spirit, and inadvertently do his work by discouraging God's children in the very things of the Lord.

This happened to Jesus, too. His very own disciples were not listening to God, but rather listened to their own thoughts and attempted to get Jesus to do things that were contrary to God's will.

There are several, but this is the classic example:

Mat 16:21 From that time Jesus Christ began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.
Mat 16:22 And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You."
Mat 16:23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."

So Swee... you just keep on praying to Jesus in that Holy language called tongues, and trust the Lord will all your might.

And remember too, what Paul taught regarding tongues:

1 Cor 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

and

1 Cor 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
1 Cor 14:15 What is the outcome then? I shall pray with the spirit and I shall pray with the mind also; I shall sing with the spirit and I shall sing with the mind also.

and

1 Cor 14:18 "I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all!"

Trust the Lord, and don't try to figure it out with your head, because your head won't and cannot figure it out. Just keep praying in tongues unto God.

Be blessed in Jesus' Name.

I bought a Mahesh Chavda book on the Hidden Power of Praying in Tongues (I think that's the title) and it's been teaching me a lot about why we do it, and the power it's got over evil (like a personal firewall lol).

A couple of questions: I was praying for a friend today who is in a very bad way with his depression and not taking meds for other psych disorders and overcome by addiction and although I was upset for him I suddenly got this huge wave of emotion and tears were streaming down my face when I started praying in tongues. I did so for about half an hour but when I finished I didn't feel as upset as one would usually feel. So was that my emotion or his (my friend's) that I was feeling? And are you not meant to feel joy when praying in tongues?

Also: when I prayed later I just started praying with no definite person in mind, just a lot of things in my heart. When we pray in tongues, is it the Holy Spirit that guides our prayer for people, i.e. people we don't even know, perhaps? We need to learn this in church but I'm the newest noob and so I think everyone else pretty much has it covered. And is it okay to just pray without a definite person in mind and even if I am giving thanks to the Lord, can the Holy Spirit guide my prayer to something else if it is more pressing?

Thanks, I'm still pretty confused about the whole thing.

Great words, swee. Keep it up!

Everything you just expressed, is 100% right on. You are allowing the Holy Spirit to be expressed through you, and the experiences you have and feel, are all a part of this new Holy Spirit life.

There's no need for me to repeat what you just wrote, except to say that being or doing spiritual things in the Holy Spirit, DOES NOT mean you stop being human, and no longer have your soul and body.

So, it only makes sense that a person may cry while God's Spirit is praying through them, or they may be thinking various thoughts, and/or be very somber or sober.

This is exactly what Paul identified and taught in 1 Cor. 14, and Romans 8:26.
