Hey everyone,

I was just a little confused about something which i read in genesis the other day. i am a new convert so please forgive my ignorance. its in genesis chapter 4 when Cain kills his brother Abel. God puts a mark on his forehead to warn anyone who met him not to kill him, but if at those times there was only Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel, who are the others he was protected from?? and where did he get his wife from???

please could anyone clear this up for me, you would be doing me a great favour.

thanks guys!

I hope I can help you get a clearer understanding of it all - back in this time - which is different from now.

Adam lived to be 900 years old - so a lifespan is at least 10 times longer than today. He has plenty of time to procreate and multiply. Within this time people were born besides Adam and Cain. They had brothers and sisters that had children - then they had children, etc. etc. The others were from this. Notice it says but after a time - then it goes onto mention about Cain and Abel. This "after a time" could have meant 100 years because the life span was much longer than. If it wouldn't have been, procreation would have taken much longer for mankind.

This is a good book called from "From One Man Adam" - that discusses how we are genetically related from the very beginning.

MY DEAR BROTHER,

It states in Genesis 5:4 that "ADAM HAD OTHER SONS AND DAUGHTERS." The answer to your question is that Cain married his sister. As the Bible teaches, the human race was propagated from a single pair, so in the beginning closely related marriages were unavoidable and without risk of genetic damage, and therefore not proscribed. Prior to the Law being given to Moses -- much later when the human race had multiplied greatly and the risk of genetic damage became problematic -- these types of marriages were common. For example, Abraham married his half sister (Gen 20:12), Moses' father, Amram, married his father's sister (Ex 6:20), and Lot's daughters had children by their father (Gen 19:30-38).

As far as Cain's mark, it was intended to protect him and his posterity as the human race grew and spread across the earth, which it quickly began doing and an exponential rate.

IN CHRIST,
ephraim

Genesis 4:2 .... it says that Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

There is no time frame given. (The word later)

Perhaps there are other siblings in between.

More than likely, the wife that Cain laid with (vs. 17)...is his sister.

Hi ILFC,

It's a good question, and sadly much of it leaves you thinking that only Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel where the only ones on earth. Then you are asked the question is this is so then who did Cain and Abel married.

It's written in many other books that when Cain and Abel were born they had twin sisters. It's also recorded that Cain wanted to marry Abel's sister, and that is why he killed Abel. Cain had married his own sister. Now after Abel's death, Enoch married Abel's sister.

Now, you have to understand that our world was PERFECT in those days, and intermarriage had no disabilities.

Just to disgress slightly, the mark on Cain's fore head became the mark on Hindu women of today. And it has been suggested that the Indians are the descendants of Cain.

It was also suggested that the translation of Hindus means the Land of Nod. Along that river there are many towns with the word Cush added to them.

Now, getting back to your question, Adam and Eve had many, many Children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and so on. Adam lived for over 900 years.

Now remember the the condtions in those days were perfect, nothing like we live in today.

Take care.
Love in Christ
