My friends at church were discussing different scenerios and we coulnd't come up with an answer for this one...
Would you renounce your faith if your family was being torchered? Men think of it as your kids and wife getting torchered. Women think of your babies and husband this way, say what you would do and why. Please provide scripture if possibel.

History is replete with examples of the very scenario you describe. Have you read Fox's Book of Martyrs? This type of thing happened over and over during the Inquisition and the first persecution in Rome. Many brave souls saw their families (and ultimately themselves) tortured and executed for their refusal to renounce our mighty LORD and Saviour.
You ask for scripture. Is Christ not our greatest example?
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
1 Peter 2:21
He didn't deny us, despite His being tortured cruelly.
Or how about these?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Matthew 22:37
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:26-27
Peace to you.

I haven't read that book, but I will. The point of this thread was to ask whether it would be ok to lie about renouncing your faith although your really wouldn't. But thanks for the book, I will look into it.

Self Denile or our own torture was never the point to this thread. I know we should sacrefice everything, but our families is my concern.

This verse is confusing to me, yes I did look it up before making this thread. You can put it in context for me if I'm reading it incorrectly, but are we really to be ready to see our family get burned alive when we can simply about renouncing our faith, we infact we really don't.
Peace to you.
thank you, you too brother.

The thrust of my reply was, no, it is not ok to lie about it. Where does scripture say it is ok to lie if we're in really tough circumstances? If my family were tortured for their faith, great is their reward in heaven. I would do more damage to them by my denial of my LORD before men than any torturer could do.
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my
words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed,
when he shall come in his own glory, and in his
Father's, and of the holy angels.
Luke 9:26

It's hard to say what I would actually do. I want to think that my faith would be strong enough, but the very thought of someone causing pain to my husband and children nauseates me. To pose another question: could God forgive us if we renounce Him in order to save the lives of family?

Why would I need to renounce Jesus Christ for the sake of saving my familys life? Jesus has already saved my families life, we live for Him! We all die(I suppose being tortured?), and have our place with Jesus!! Is there another choice?
Galatians 2:20, NIV. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Dont sell out!
Philippians 2:9-11, NIV. "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Renounce this, for any reason? No, not ever!
Matthew 19:29, TLB. "And anyone who gives up his home, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children, or property, to follow Me, shall receive a hundred times as much in return, and shall have eternal life."
I give up everything to gain it all, Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!

i would hope that I would not renounce my faith even then. God grant us the grace to stand up for him. By the way, this again shows how ignorent even Christians are of their own history. The whole issue was experienced by generations of Christians during the first 300 years of the church in Rome. It continued down through the centuries. Christians have always had to face this kind of issue, and in fact are doing so even now in other parts of the world today.
