Alright folks, we've been getting to stodgy, serious, and sanctimonious (along with using way to much alliteration.)
Sooooooooooo...tell me!
What are your choices for the best and worst songs to get stuck in your head?
I'll go first...
Best- "The Final Countdown" by Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Final_Countdown_(song))
Freakin'. Awesome. (And if you have ever watched Arrested Development, you know what I'm talking about...;) ) "This is the final countdown!" *enter keyboards* "De-do-deee-doo, De-do-deet-deet-doo..."
Worst- Ohhh...hmmmmm...I'm gonna go with "Since You've Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson...man that song is lame...and completely incoherent, too.

(two of the) Best: Sweet Talkin' Woman by ELO or Heat of the Moment by Asia
(two of the) Worst: Oops, I Did It Again by Britney Spears or Waterfalls by TLC
these are just off the top of my head, but there are some songs that terrorize me...

Oh! And two more great ones are :The 59th Street Bridge Song by Simon & Garfunkel/Harpers Bizzarre and Dream a Little Dream Of Me by The Mamas and the Papas

Europe's "The Final Countdown" is one of the finest songs ever, but since it was taken (and really, when I hear it, it DOES stay in my head!).
So I'll focus on THIS week:
Best: "Destroyer" by The Kinks
Worst: Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" (since last night!)

The best song? Hmmm, I get zillions of good songs stuck in my head. Right now "Kiss Them for Me" by Siouxsie and the Banshees is stuck in my head, but earlier it was "Master of Puppets" by Metallica. The worst, do we even need to go there?

While I love metal and really hard rock, I am not a big Europe fan. And esp the Final Countdown, so if that song got stuck in my head, it would go on the worst list, lol.

Best - Journey "Don't Stop Believing"
On the radio this morning, a woman was trying desperately to remember the name of this song to win concert tickets... she sang the ENTIRE SONG EXCEPT THE TITLE and couldn't remember it! :D
Worst - J Geils "Centerfold"
The Prokeimenon!
20th September 2006, 09:58 PM
Best: Brown Sugar, or any Stones song with an infectous Keef-baby riff
Worst: pretty much all of the songs called the best in the previous posts :D

I'll repeat it again and again: someone said ALL the best songs were written before 1995 (well, there are a couple here and there, but nothing like Simon @ Garfunkle or Cyndi Lauper!)
Best songs for me -- True Colors by Cyndi Lauper, and #2 is Nothing Compares to You by Sinead O'Connor. And a number of other songs up until about 95.
Worst songs? All the ones that have the same kinda music with the same kinda subject (love, usually), with the same kinda intention of voice, but with EXACTLY the same words. When they sing the beginning of a line, you know the end of it, and the end of the stanza, and the end of the song. Can't stand these. They tick me off, I get tremors and get extremely violent and irritated. And yet there is millions upon millions of these types of songs.

Oh, I love both of those songs and have some serious memories with True Colors. Feels like the '80s all over again.

Some of the best music I have heard is by Metallica, before they went commercial. The songs are long, complex and filled with drastic time changes in the middle of the songs. Hardly your garden variety pop music that you hear on the radio.

Once I figured out that pop music is churned out by an industry, played repetitively over and over and over until it's familiar, which we then confuse with "liking" it, and then go out and buy albums of the stuff, I largely stopped listening to it.
In Russia, until the '90's, there was no such industry, so music that was popular was what really spoke to people's hearts. This is changing now, but just to put in some offerings that were never made to make money, but merely to speak the truth and thus became popular in the true sense of the word (of the people) (and to avoid the charge of party-pooping).
Best: Okudzhava - anything at all, but...OK, how about "Song of the Moscow Metro"
Worst: "Planes come first, girls - later" (an early 20th century popular ditty about men who knew their priorities)

I think it is. I actually like old country like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, etc. Other than a few ballads and some just funny songs, I don't care for the modern stuff (anything after 1970). I'm pretty much a classic rock guy. I'll take some Skynerd, Molly Hatchet, Bad Company, Eagles, ZZ Top or Ozzy any day. I used to love AC/DC but I just can't stomach their music anymore, it makes me feel spiritually assaulted to listen to it.

Well being 19, I was raised hearing things like Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, etc. That's the kind of country I like.
The Eagles, ZZ Top and Ozzy I get into. The rest, not so much, if at all.

Ackey Breaky Heart. Really. Ugh.
"Welcome To My Life" by Simple Plan makes me want to claw my own eyeballs out.
"Hero" by Julio Iglesias makes me want to shove kittens into a running garbage disposal.
"I Don't Wanna Wait" by Paula Cole compels me to find the closest NOW headquarters and burn it to the ground.
"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger makes me feel like I'm trapped on a speeding bus to hell.
And Tim McGraw's cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" makes vomit spill out of every bodily orifice.
"Changes" by David Bowie
"Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen
"Too Tight" by Con Funk Shun
"Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba
and "This Side" by Nickel Creek are the antidotes to those travesties.

Best: anything by Fear Factory, Projekt, Iona, Enya, or The Birthday Massacre
Worst: anything by AC/DC, or 80s hair metal (especially "Girls Girls Girls" by Motley Crue), or modern sex songs (such as that one by Nickelback), or "Bad to the Bone" (EVERY SINGLE movie/TV show/commercial about "bad boys" plays that song)

Then once again, I would highly recommend Coheed and Cambria, especially the album In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002E5OJ6/qid=1138658242/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/102-3912153-7124101?s=music&v=glance&n=5174) Awe.....Some No other words for it. I have gotten their songs stuck in my head more than any other, especially the title track, Cuts Marked In The March Of Men, and A Favor House Atlantic, their most radio friendly song. Not for the faint of heart or the ADD (many of the songs clock in at over 6 minutes, and the title track has three distinct movements and has a full choir and string section in the final movement:bow: ) it is still a masterpiece.
A few more worst...
"The Macarena" by....who knows, and more importantly, who cares?
"God Must Have Spent, a Little More Time on You" by N'Sync
"Under the Sea" by Sebastian the Crab
*shudders*

ModernDaySpyridon... I knew I liked you! Coheed and Cambria's my favorite band, and In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 is the album which got me hooked!
I would recommend the song In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth, The Crowing, A Favor House Atlantic, and Backend of Forever. If you don't like those, you probably won't like any of their stuff.
Modern, you're getting added to the buddy list, and reps. :P
Oh, and to stay on topic...
Best: Backend of Forever by Coheed and Cambria.
Worst: None at the moment, surprisingly.

Jitterbug
Jitterbug
Jitterbug
Jitterbug
You put the boom-boom into my heart
You send my soul sky high when your lovin' starts
Jitterbug into my brain
Goes a bang-bang-bang 'til my feet do the same
But something's bugging you, something ain't right
My best friend told me what you did last night
Left me sleepin' in my bed
I was dreaming, but I should have been with you instead.
Wake me up before you go-go
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
I wanna hit that high (yeah, yeah)
You take the grey skies out of my way
You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day
Turned a bright spark into a flame
My beats per minute never been the same
'Cause you're my lady, I'm your fool
It makes me crazy when you act so cruel
Come on, baby, let's not fight
We'll go dancing, everything will be all right
Wake me up before you go-go
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
I wanna hit that high (yeah, yeah, baby)
(Jitterbug)
(Jitterbug)
Cuddle up, baby, move in tight
We'll go dancing tomorrow night
It's cold out there, but it's warm in bed
They can dance, we'll stay home instead
(Jitterbug)
Wake me up before you go-go
Don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go-go
I don't want to miss it when you hit that high
Wake me up before you go-go
'Cause I'm not plannin' on going solo
Wake me up before you go-go
Take me dancing tonight
Wake me up before you go-go,
Don't you dare to leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Take me dancing,

ok, here are some that have been played to the point of tossing cookies whenever I hear them now:

I would add "Stairway to Heaven" to that list - but we are talking about Zep so that doesn't count.
