I've recently inherited The Liturgy of the Hours in a single book (around 2000 pages). I've noticed there are four-volume sets as well. What is omitted in mine? I'm lay, not clergy.

It depends. Is the title of your volume "Christian Prayer"?

I think so. It's at home right now, but I believe this eBay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/Liturgy-Of-The-Hours-Catholic-Prayerbook-1976_W0QQitemZ160030337170QQihZ006QQcategoryZ378QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is of the same book:

The main thing that the single volume "Christian Prayer" is missing that the 4-volume "Liturgy of the Hours" contains is the Office of Readings. This is an extra "hour" for each day that consists of three Psalms (or excerpts from Psalms) and two longish (a page or so) readings. The first reading is usually from the Bible, while the second is usually from the writings of the Saints.
Since these readings are different for each day of the year, they take up a lot of space. However, I have found them extremely valuable.
Also, the 4-volume set is a little easier to use, as there is room to repeat some antiphons etc., and therefore you can cut down (a little) on the flipping back and forth between pages.

I have both...I started with the single volume Christian Prayer, but moved on to the four volume Liturgy Of The Hours, and am very happy that I did.

I have the four volumes and the guide which accompanies it, telling you which readings to do. My major question is this: when you have a major feast day or solemnity, such as the feast of the Ascension, there are extra readings to be done on that day. How do you discern which of the ferial readings and which of the Solemnity to follow?
