Food bank appeal letter?

I've drawn a blank tonight trying to come up with an appeal letter for our emergency food bank.
We had to post a sign saying that the food bank would be temporarily closed due to no food.
I am thinking that I want to send a letter to local union offices then follow up with a visit.
Any ideas?
