1. Who are the Recabites that are mentioned on Jeremiah 35 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah%2035&version=31)?

2. Why does Jeremiah 31:9 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah%2031:9;&version=31;) say that Ephraim is the firstborn son? I thought Reuben was.

Please help me. I have a "disability" that hinders me from following Bible facts. Appreciate your help.

The Recabites are a group of descendants of the Kenites (See Judges 1:16 & 1 Chr. 2:55). This group is known first from the story of Jehonandab the son Rechab, who assited Jehu in purging the Baal prophets from Samaria (see 2 Kings 10:15-28).

The Recabites lived as nomads, rejecting all forms of urband and agrarian life. They refused to drink wne or strong drink and would not cultivate vineyards.

They also wouldn't plant any other crops. It's believed that they were clans of metal-smiths. The Recabites were invited into one of the chambers surrounding the courtyward of the temple of God for a symbokic demonstration by Jeremiah.

Our Lord is speaking of HIS firstborn, Ephraim, son of Joseph and his Egyptian wife Asenath (Gen. 42:50-52).

Thanks Elijah!

About Ephraim, I don't understand. Are there two Ephraims? The one I'm talking about is Jacob's son. That was why I'm confused because I thought Jacob's oldest son was Reuben.

Thanks agian

Hi Mate,

I gave you the answer Ephraim is the first son of Joseph. You may have been talking about Jacob, but Jeremiah 31:9 is talkin about Joseph.

"Firstborn" is not always who "got out first". "Firstborn" points out the precedence a son has in his inheritance. He's the first in the inheritance.

While it's normally given to the oldest son, it isn't always, as in the examples of Ishmael / Isaac, Esau / Jacob, and Absalom / Adonijah / Solomon. Some people lose their birthright through denying the family or their parents.

Yes, sorry about that. I just realize that I got Jacob and Joseph mixed up.

So if Ephraim is not a son of Jacob, does this mean that Ephraim is not one of the 12 tribes of Israel? The 12 tribes of Israel were named after Jacob's sons.

If I'm right please tell me. If I'm wrong please correct. :)
