View Full Version : Am I really non-denominational?

I know this sounds like a silly question, but I really am wondering. I have been attending Poeple's Church of Montreal for three years now. This church is affiliated to the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada. Aside from this, and knowing it is a protestant church, I have seen no indication of any denomination what's so ever,,,, so I naturally assumed it is non-denominational.
I am asking because I am to be married soon and circumstances (mainly futur living arrangments) may oblige me to find another church; and I am very happy witht he way services are conducted at People's. If I need to find a new church, I would like to find one with similar thinking.
Any thoughts?

I think you can consider yourself non-denominational. My church has some relationship with the United Church of Christ, but it isn't a full member. I'll call myself non-denominational.

Any institution or organizacion, although do not have a name, belong to a denomination. do not change love by obligation, to swear love in front of an altar, does not serve as anything, The succes gives the love , God is love

Your congregation may share beliefs and practices with other congregations, and it may support the same ministries and educational institutions as other congregations. But it's still "non-denominational" as longs as there's no "headquarters," so to speak. This means that any decisions that affect your congregation are made by your congregation and NOT by some guy in an office somewhere.
Ask the pastor. If anyone in your church would know for certain, it would be the pastor.

Actually, the Associated Gospel Churches has a website; which states it is Evangelical. I was wondering if this is considered a denomination or not?

The best thing to do is ask people in the church or ask someone apart of the staff sometimes you will be surprised I used to be penetcostal than I switched churches and I thought it was penetcostal until I asked my mom and she told me it was non-denominational but either way I can be considered as both since I see any major differeance by that I mean the way the service is conducted and some of the things we believe and just about everyone came from a pantacostal church including most of the staff except like two and all and the co-pastor was apart of a penetcostal church.

I think the Associated Gospel Chruches of Canada do consider themselves to be a denomination. The term "evangelical" itself does not denote a denomination but rather a description of certain beliefs and practices. The are other evangelical denominations as well such as the Southern Baptist Convention, the Assemblies of God, and the Evangelical Free Church of America.
I would consider myself non-denominational because I haven't fully subscribed myself to the tenets of any particular denomination, although my beliefs are definitely in the realm of evangelical protestantism. It sounds like you're kind of in that same boat. If I were you the first thing I would do is check the directory on the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada website to see if you can find another one where you will be living. If that turns out negative, I would talk with your pastor about the situation and request his guidance as to what types of churches are similar that you might like. From what you describe, it seems like a contemporary evangelical non-denominational church just might be right for you if you have to make a switch.
