I very easily found this quote from the internet.
"Those who read and follow the notes contained in The MacArthur Study Bible will be led to the same place MacArthur is going, that is, the blackness of darkness (2 Peter 2:17), where all unbelievers go, the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8)"
I don't know whether they call themselves a discernement church (they certainly think they are unique in protecting God's truth), but it points up something I have problems with. I noticed that there was a thread on "How fundamentalist are you?" I hope this was just some fun becuase otherwise I find the quest rather offensive. Is this what Jesus wants to find on earth when He returns?
Anyway, back to John Macarthur. If people can find Macarthur so dangerous what hope is there for any of us to find the truth? Is scoring a particular percentage on a theological propositions test really what it's all about?
Are we tithing mint and cumin theologically, but failing to demonstrate charity?

Not having read the entire piece it is difficult to comment upon it. But I will say this. There will be one and only one group of people in heaven. Those who have been counted worthy because of the sacrifice of Christ in whatever method that grace is imparted. I am sure there will be believers who have never read the Bible in heaven. I am also sure there will be people who can quote large portions of it and be able to engage in deep theological debate who will not be there.
As regards the thread it was simply the results of an online survey that was supposed to indicate how Fundamentalist one is.
I don't think that anyone here believes that only Fundamentalists can attatin salvation. (was that your question?)

I've got MacArthur's NKJV Bible and I love it. He's got the right combination of Christian theology and Jewish roots-type notes to keep me interested and learning. Also, I've seen several programs he's hosted on Word Pictures and he's just so theologically solid.
If the thread was in the Pentecostal/Charismatic area, they despise MacArthur because he is anti-Charismatic. That may be the only thing I've ever found to disagree with him on.
I agree with you - too many groups, each the only group holding to the truth. :(

That's a good reply. He's trustworthy. I've no doubt someone whose understanding was formed by this man wouldn't go wrong. Behaviour, however, is moulded by discipline, life and the Holy Spirit. There are theological 'monsters' who just like the 'discernment' quest and have no pastoral heart at all.
I also believe there are other leaders who are giving their people 'what they need' theological, even if the leaders themselves couldn't bring themselves to work together. I used to find this a stumbling block.
I've come to the point of personally NOT committing myself to any one man or even to assess one against another I suppose I can't find my way through the labyrinth of conflicting expositions. I've accepted that there's going to be error amongst those finding their way into Christ's presence.
However there are those who disagree and would be upset by Macarthur's confession that he's a 'leaky dispensationalist', saying that's no way to give assurance that you believe the Bible is perspicuous.
