so why do I get all those funny marks when I past in text and format it?

It has to do with the WYSIWYG interface we have here and where you are copying the text from.

Best bet if you do a lot of copying/pasting from the web is to turn off the interface so your posts won't look like a mix of vB code and HTML. :)
