Forget my denominational icon and tell me if there is an answer to this question: If you would say that there is an area in the United States that has always been considered a Wesleyan/Methodist stronghold, where would it be?

There are more United Methodists in Georgia than in any other state.

Kentucky is the stronghold of true Wesleyan Methodism, with the influence of Asbury College and Seminary.

Does that make Georgia the stronghold of false Methodism?

Georgia Methodism is institutional and nepotistic. It's probably pretty much the same in Kentucky as far as the institutional church goes, but Methodism as a movement emphasizing Sciptural holiness is more alive in Kentucky because of the Asbury influence, although Georgia can claim the Indian Springs Campmeeting, where sanctification is preached with much vigor.

Georgia is also the home to Candler School of Theology which claims at least six Methodist bishops as alumni.

Well if I may give my 2 cents.

I live in the foothils of NC south of Winston-Salem and we have a huge Methodist contingent in the rural areas. I've been doing some research on the subject and found that, as in other rural areas, this part of the state was heavily infuenced by the circuit riders such as Francis Asbury. The tradition still holds and we have a large amount of circuits and it seems that a drive through the county reveals inumerable small, Methodist congregations. The churches in the area also hold to the tradition of being very revivalist with a focus on Holiness and spirit filled worship. While we may not have the numbers of KY or GA we have the traditional Wesleyan spirit brought to us by the likes of Asbury and other circuit riders.
