View Full Version : Is Glenn Beck Orthodox?

I have been listening and watching (CNN Headline Prime) Glenn Beck for some time. I am convinced he is a Christian and I am beginning to believe that he is Orthodox. He made the comment on the air recently that he was doing his "Mid-life Crisis" tour all across the country and he commented that he had been to church on Sunday and he went as far as to say that where he attends church, worship is exactly the same regardless of which city he is in.... Curious!

I am sad to hear about the Mormon thing...I was just so sure. I thought maybe RCC, but the more I heard him, it sounded Orthodox.
Lord have mercy.
On the other hand, the guy is a blast to listen too!

I also get his morning radio show on local AM here. I get him on radio in the morning and again on CNN in the eve......good stuff.
Now, what is our plan to convert him, yet again?

As a fan of his Radio show (The TV show is good, but not that good), as well as an Insider, all I can say is "You sick twisted freak!"

Now- is anybody else a fan of the Michael Savage? I'll be the first to admit I'm a huge fan! He's the only person in the media ever that I've heard mention the killing of Serbian Orthodox by "peacekeeping forces".

All of a sudden one day Glenn just disappeared off my radio with no warning. The station played 3 or 4 weeks of holding pattern music and is now (IIRC) a spanish dance music station :(
I too enjoy listening to Savage, sadly he is usually pre-empted by the other Savages from Turner Field

I am proud to admit that I have met Glenn Beck 2x, and even got him to sign my copy of his book. AND his Midlife Crisis Tour stop in Pittsburgh was a total riot! I haven't laughed that hard in years.
Now, are there any fans of Quinn and Rose on here?

Me and our old Parish Reader had a joke about Quinn and Rose. "Gotta make sure I get up early so I can get my update on Gays and Guns!" I was listening to them before 104.7 got started.

I love to watch him, but his hardcore-far-right-Republofanaticism kills me everytime. I always figured he was a born and bred Southern Baptist with icons of His All Holiness Jerry Falwell in his house. LOL
Ahh, there's that famous leftist open-mindedness I'm always hearing about. So, does revelation that Glenn Beck is not Southern, not Baptist, and not even Republican mean you'll be less likely to stereotype in the future?

Glen is definately a Morman. He has talked about it on the show before. I have listened to Quinn and Rose but sometimes they are too loud and crass for me. I miss our local guy in Wheeling but he stepped on too many toes and was a little to liberal for the station. It now goes
Quinn and Rose
Glenn Beck
Rush
Local guy: Steve Navaughtney (sp?)
Local sports
Savage Nation
Preaching or Classic Country

Doesn't his statement just ooze with open mindedness?!?! I mean, only liberals are truly open to the truth and we hardcore Republicanofascists are the truly closed minded of the world.

Because he never identified himself as a leftist, he never called himself open-minded to the exclusion of people who disagree with him, and he never called any of you "Republicofascists".
I am not familiar with Mr. Beck, but from the sounds of it, LOTS of people are to the left of his political and social views and are still conservative and Christians. So your instantly judging this guy as a hypocritical liberal is a bit, well, reactionary.

Could be that he is Born Again. Their service is the same no matter where you go,
-Rock Bands playing Christian Rock music
-People speaking in tongues
-Laying of the Hands (Benny Hinn lol)
-Talking about the Rapture and the State of Israel as necessary for the salvation of Christians everywhere.
:D
Jokes aside, most denominations have similar, if not identical services within their branch.

Long Sermon with more readings from the Bible
Hymns
Concluding remarks

Not unless you are Glenn Beck.
He's not disrespecting Republicans, he's saying that Mr. Beck's brand is fanatical in his eyes. Does that make him a bleeding-heart liberal that claims to be open-minded to the exclusion of everyone else? Not at all.
We have to be careful as people (much less as Orthodox Christians) to resist the urge to be so polarize each other. It's toddler-like polarized thinking that's killing the level of discourse in this country. If someone doesn't like Savage or Beck or Coulter or whoever, he or she is a bleeding-heart liberal homobortionist, while those who don't flagellate themselves every time they drive a car, or who find anything good about the Bush Administration are theocratic, fundamentalist Christian Republicofascists. And the propaganda from both sides keeps rolling on, cowing each of their respective markets and doing no one any favors. It is getting that bad on TV, in print, and over radio.
I'm not accusing anyone here of what I have said in this last paragraph. But the level of political discourse really is this bad here in Portland, OR. And it's exactly what keeps the talking heads from both sides in silk underwear.

Oops, I really didn't realize that I had offended someone beccause I haven't checked this thread for a little while.
No, I wasn't saying anything bad about anyone.
Glen Beck would probably call himself a Republofanatic and if you are a Republican I don't see what kind of problem you would have that term.
I would have no problem with someone calling me a Moderofanatic. I would embrace it.
If you have a problem with being called a Republofanatic, your problem is not with the person calling you that, but rather the Republican party of which you do not wish to be a fanatic.

It's like that everywhere. I hate that if I argue against abortion or against the death penalty, there are people who will assume all kinds of things about my religion, my personal life, or my beliefs without even taking the time to figure out who and what I am, or why I might think that way.
I'm pro-life, so obviously I was raised in an evangelical or Roman Catholic home and I can't think for myself. I'm against the death penalty, so obviously I'm a vegetarian hippie who goes around sprinkling flower petals everywhere I walk.

lol - so true
And if we Orthodox fly the Lebanese flag or donate money to the Patriarch of Antioch, well some people at CF will accuse us of being anti-Semitic. Yet, the German word antisemitisch from which the English word anti-Semitic originates meant being against anyone of the Semitic races (Arabs and Jews).
I just cannot see how supporting our Christian brothers and sisters in Lebanon to rebuild their homes, businesses, and churches can be mistaken as being anti-Semitic when the Lebanese are a Semitic people.
The word antisemitic (antisemitisch in German) was probably first used in 1860 by the Jewish scholar Moritz Steinschneider in the phrase "antisemitic prejudices" (German: "antisemitische Vorurteile"). Steinschneider used this phrase to characterize Ernest Renan's ideas about how "Semitic races" were inferior to "Aryan races." These pseudo-scientific theories concerning race, civilization, and "progress" had become quite widespread in Europe in the second half of the 19th century, especially as Prussian nationalistic historian Heinrich von Treitschke did much to promote this form of racism. In Treitschke's writings Semitic was practically synonymous with Jewish, in contrast to its usage by Renan and others.
Anyway back on topic, we should not judge others.
There is an elderly lady in my parish who used to be a member of the LDS. She converted to Orthodoxy and today one of her three sons is a hieromonk and college professor and another son is a deacon in the OCA. She did good.
Where there is breath, there is hope. Let us pray for Glenn's conversion.

The level of political discourse is bad because people like you call those of us who aren't bleeding heart liberals "toddler-like."

Wow. Did you really miss the part where I said I wasn't accusing anyone in this thread of the things I was saying in the paragraph you referenced, but that I was making a statement indicating the dangers of engaging in discourse like that?
I'm not a liberal. I have not accused you of being toddler-like. And I did accuse so-called "bleeding-heart liberal" propagandists as being toddler-like, along with hard right-winger propagandists. If you read what I wrote, you'd note that I accused people on both extremes of using toddler-era reasoning (i.e., everything is either all good or all bad) in political discourse to make it easy to judge and dismiss one another, without actually getting any progress made besides steamrolling each other. It's all about dynasty after that and who will fell whom next. That's good for no one.
However, if this is the way you react, be certain that the shoe doesn't actually fit, and that you're not actually wearing it.
