Could anyone please help me understand. Lately I have been striving to develop a closer relationship with Jesus. As with everyone, I struggle from time to time and have some questions for Jesus.
My question is, when I ask God these things, how can I be sure of His answer to me? How can I be sure what I hear in return is truly God telling me, and not my own emotions/mind telling me what to do?
Thanks and God Bless!

Your first goal is the revealed will of God. All the other un-known thing in life that we seek God guidance in will not be answered until we comply and submit to the revealed will.
Many decisions we make like Marriage are easy. The Bible says to marry in the Lord. Yes, you are correct it is not that simple. There are other factors.
Let say you want to be a Pastor’s wife. It is your hearts desire. OK What you should do is pursue study and preparation for that purpose. If this is your calling find godly pastor's wife’s, and attend Bible College and Seminary taking classes to better prepare you to support you future Pastor Husband.
This same thing is true on other vocations. I you are a male any you are studying to be a Electrical Engineer. You are living a godly life keeping your life pure and serving God along the way. God's will is for you to only marry a Christian Lady. This lady should be one in agreement with you and what God is doing in your life.
What about buying a house. If your life is grounded in the raveled will the Bible and you have married the person God has placed in your life then the decision to buy a home will be joined with the vocation the both of you are in agreement on and the place where this will take place.
There is a fork in the road. Both are correct. What is God's will. You were given a mind and a will. If you are in God's will morally and you are following the revealed will in the Bible then all the wisdom you have acquired from the Bible, your walk in life tempered by Scripture you will be able to make a wise decision that honors God. God allows you to make good choices even when there are more than one good choice to take.
The un-know will of God become easier when we are totally committed to the Revealed Will of God'
If you have a desire and it honors God then you are in God's will. You desire to be a nurse. You are living out in your life the moral will of God as taught in Scripture. You attend college to study to be a nurse. As you study and learn God will guide you and use you to be his witness in your profession. He places desire in our hearts as we submit to his revealed will the Bible. Basically nothing is off limit for you when you are in the revealed will of God.
God Bless - Hope this helps.

Read the Bible daily. If your emotions tell you something that is contrary to the word of God you can be assured that the emotion is not of God but of the sinful flesh which we have all been cursed with.
