the Coptic Orthodox Church On this day ( 22 Aug ), celebrate the assumption of the body of our pure Lady St. Mary, the Mother of God. While she was keeping vigil, praying in the Holy Sepulchre, and waiting for the happy minute of her liberation from the bonds of the flesh, the Holy Spirit informed her of her forthcoming departure from this vain world. When the time drew near, the disciples and the virgins of the Mt. of Olives (Zeiton) came and the Lady was lying on her bed. Our Lord, surrounded by thousands and thousands of angels, came to Her. He consoled her, and announced her with the everlasting joy which was prepared for Her. She was happy, and she stretched out her hands, blessed the Disciples, and the Virgins. Then, she delivered up her pure soul (http://www.copticchurch.net/synaxarium/05_21.html#1) in the hand of her Son and God, Jesus Christ, Who ascended her to the higher habitations. As of the pure body, they shrouded it and carried it to Gethsemane.
On their way, some of the Jews blocked the way in the face of the disciples to prevent the burial. One of them seized the coffin. His hands were separated from his body, and remained hanging until he believed and repented for his mischievous deed. With the prayers of the holy disciples, his hands were reattached to his body as they had been before.
St. Thomas was absent at the time of St. Mary's departure, but he came after the burial. On his way back to Jerusalem, St. Thomas saw angels carrying St. Mary's pure body and ascending with it to heaven, and one of the angels said to him, "Hurry and kiss the pure body of St. Mary." When he arrived to the disciples, they informed him about St. Mary's departure. He told them, "I will not believe, unless I see her body, as you all know how I did doubt the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ before." They took him to the tomb, to uncover the body but they did not find it, and they were perplexed and amazed. St. Thomas told them how he saw the pure body ascending to heaven, carried by angels.

The Holy Spirit then told them, "The Lord did not Will to leave Her Holy body on earth." The Lord had promised his pure apostles that they would see her in flesh another time. They were waiting for the fulfillment of this truthful promise, until the sixteenth day of the month of Misra, when the promise of seeing her was fulfilled. They saw her sitting on the right hand of her Son and her Lord, surrounded by the angelic Host, as David (http://www.copticchurch.net/synaxarium/04_23.html#1) prophesied and said, "At your right hand stands the queen." (Psalm 45:9) St. Mary's life on earth was sixty years. She spent twelve years of them in the temple, thirty years in the house of the righteous St. Joseph (http://www.copticchurch.net/synaxarium/11_16.html#1), and fourteen years in the care of St. John the Evangelist (http://www.copticchurch.net/synaxarium/05_04.html#1), as the Lord commanded her saying, "Woman behold your Son," and to St. John, "Behold your Mother." May Her intercession be with us. Amen.

Why do the Coptics celebrate the feast of the Assumption on Aug. 22?

The New Calendar Eastern Orthodox celebrate the feast of the Dormition on August 15 with the Catholics.

While the Old Calendarist Eastern Orthodox celebrate the feast of the Dormition 13 days later on August 28.

Well, God's time is karios (the Eternal Presence = the Eternal Now).

Today, the Most Holy Theotokos is assumed into Heaven and reigns eternally with Her Son, Jesus Christ, our God.

i hate to ruin this lovely article but we were talking about this in chuch bfore and I dont' undersatnd it.

I know that they raised mary's body up with her because she was pure but what exacutly does that mean. Like she's basicly like a person walking around in heven? Or is her body just like lieing around somewhere..cuz that's sorta gross.

What happnes to the rest of us when we are brought to heven constiering that we are unpure? Do we get a new body and then we just walk around in that? I'm confused.

Jesus ascended into heaven, Mary was assumed into heaven. Elijah and Enoch are others similar to Mary. When Jesus appeared to Thomas, it wasn't a ghost or spirit of Jesus, but His real body.

I don't know what the coptics believe about purification, theosis, or purgatory.

I thought maybe I could help.

Just a point of clarification. It is not dogma nor required for an Orthodox Christian to accept the assumption of the Theotokos, but it is thought by the early Church to be feasible that someone like the Theotokos could ascend bodily into heaven. In fact, in the end, all of us will take the same path.

There is a slight difference between St. Mary, and Sts. Elijah and Enoch. The later saints from the OT did not die yet. In fact, it is believed that in the book of Revelations, the two men coming back will be those two, who later on be persecuted and die. So all must die before rising from the dead and ascending with Christ to the heavens. St. Mary did just that. She died, and because of her purity, she ascended into the heavens. It is not at all impossible to see this, since she is indeed "highly favored one" and "filled with grace" in the eyes of God. She is after all the Theotokos.

However, no one is required to believe it. It is just something that was in Orthodox tradition, to which we like to share with.
