View Full Version : How does the Methodist Church arbitrate doctrine?

I'm having a debate on General Theology about norming and arbitration in which Protestant and orthodox views are contentiously at odds. I’m trying to get them to explain their methods in more detail to me and each other, but it dawned on me that I have no idea how the MethodistChurch does it.

Looking at umc.org there are three things that stand out to me, the Judiciary Council, the Council of Bishops and the Book of Discipline. What is the Book of Discipline?? That sounds like exactly what I’m looking for, a codified set of rules for a legal system that has a judiciary for making doctrinal decisions. That is exactly the analogy I’ve been using in my arguments on GT! What is the relationship between pastors, the Council of Bishops and the Judiciary Council?

Every four years the General Conference meets as a legislature and votes on changes to the Book of Discipline.
