we had a great homily today. i took notes. father grant spoke of the nature of the sacraments, and how the church community benefits by them.
he is a great speaker. he has that natural ability to make even his homilies come across as a conversation among friends.

Our homily focused on the Hebrew notion of "Messiahship" and the nature of Christ.

Our sermon was on John 6:51-58
John 6:51-58
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever."
The sermon was given by my dear friend who was only ordained two months ago, and (unusually) is serving as a Deacon within his own congregation. His sermons so far have been excellent (better than the Rector's).

Too early to tell, so far, but I hope it doesn't become that way. The two of them are good friends, anyway. Kind of a long story, but at the time that my deacon friend began seminary, he came down with some severe bowel cancer. He doesn't have much bowel left, but he is currently free from any cancer, three years on. Our Rector, along with many other friends, cared for him pastorally (which is his true vocation), and they became very close. I find it hard to imagine that friendship diminishing now that they are working together, and I have a feeling that my Rector is aware that preaching isn't his strong point.

Roommate preached - it was, as the Bishop puts it, "A crackin sermon." Obviously, the Eucharistic implications were covered. Maybe I can post it. Karen has read one of his sermons before, and I think she liked it.

Superb. One of the local missions has an ordained anglican presbyter working with them, and he helps out at St. H's. Our current locum chaplain is pretty good, I suspect he was better 20 odd years ago as he tends to get a bit tangental now, but this guy is superb. I just hope our new Chaplain is as good.
He was continuing our series in Ephesians, speaking on how Paul completely bucked the culture by how he addressed them in Chapter 6.

Our Vicar's sermoln this Sunday, August 20..focused on the meaning of the Eucharist and how often the gathering, thanksgiving, and partaking is replaced in hearts with worldly idols...money, entertainment (ouch!) and over-patriotism. (nationalism) He stressed the necessity to "Seek first the Kingdom of God..." It was good and powerful. I wanted to shout "Amen!"
