I thought I would start a Ladies Only thread and see how it goes.
I'm trying to get control of the stuff and clutter in my house. I've hauled a lot of it out to the garage for a garage sale next weekend. And I'm cleaning out the cupboards to get rid of the stuff I really don't use.
Any suggestions for dealing with the desire to keep collecting stuff? I keep buying stuff at garage sales!

Great title, particularly these verses:
Psa 31:9 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.
Psa 31:10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.
But wouldn't PROVERBS 31 be a bit more appropriate--just a suggestion from mrs. menno... :P

My husband went and got Proverbs 31 verses 10 onwards engraved inside my wedding ring.
I ran away a week after we had been married from blind terror when I read all that I thought he wanted me to do all that at once!^_^

People who can actually de-junk (& stay that way!) suggest doing one room at a time & one part of the room before moving onto the next part. As I'm one of these people who reads the old nespaper used to line the drawers before I can throw it away I don't get on real fast even using this method!

I read the drawer liner paper, too.
When my grandma died I inherited her bedroom furniture, and when I went to change the paper, I realized the stuff in the bottom drawer was from 1973 (grandma had a hard time bending down to the bottom drawer so he hadn't changed the paper down there). I spent like an hour reading a paper that was published when I was a little girl!
Trouble with me in getting rid of things is I keep thinking, "I paid a lot of money for that" or "I might use that".
I have a collection of china dogs I'd like to get rid of, but I know I'd never get my money out of them if I sold them at the garage sale, so back in the drawer they went.
I have a tea set I paid too much for and I don't want to sell it because I could only get about 1/3 of what I paid.
Story of my life, clinging to my mistakes because they cost me too much! ^_^

the only way to de-junk is to let it go. this much i do know. sometimes you just have to take the cut in value and move on.

I read Richard Foster's book on Simplicity a number of years ago & that certainly gave me a different perspective on hanging onto things. It is a form of idolotry & it is only when we try to let go we find how entrenched our love of 'thing' is. I've been trying ever since to hold my possessions more lightly because they ain't a'coming with me where I'm going.

My biggest trouble is that I constantly struggle with the idea that I shouldn't own anything at all.
I tend to go overboard when cleaning out my possessions, then end up buying the same things over and over. :(

Yep! Been there, done that. I hate feeling cluttered & possessions tend to give that feeling. I wish I could just have what Jesus gives me & be completely happy with that.

Can't. One left no forwarding address & is incommunicado at present, one is at sea for 8 months of the year but tends to want his stuff when they let him on land again, one thinks he lives here (he works very big hours & pretty much just sleeps & eats here) - which leaves the girls: one collects clothes & the other is an art freak. I don't know which is worse. Yes I do - the one with works of art constantly in progress that can't be shifted until she's finished with them!!! Creativity is a wonderful thing!

Hey, you try living with 4 teenagers who move out but think my home is their personal storage shed.
My sister is 50 and still wants to use my house as her personal warehouse. :(
I've been begging her for 2-/2 years to come get what she wants from my parents' belongings, and now she's mad at me because I scheduled the garage sale for this weekend. She isn't done going through stuff. :(
