Hi all

CF should be upgrading to new forum software this weekend.

There are also plans to either:

Change hosting company

OR

Convert all web serving software from lighttpd to Apache 2.

I'm still trying to decide which way to go at this stage.

There may be some downtime when CF upgrades.

Please note that we will be moving from a Warning system to an Infraction system (which now comes built into the software) after our upgrade.

More info to come later...

So we're making the move to 3.6?

Be aware: Apparently there is a bug in the Report Posts as Threads feature. It doesn't work.

The mods are going to be running around like chickens without heads for a few weeks while trying to figure out how things work. ;)

From TFA:

The infraction system allows you and your moderators to flexibly reprimand problem users. Create as many types of infractions as you want to represent any type of rules violation on your board. Each infraction has a controllable weight (points) and an option to allow it to be applied only as a warning, which alerts the user to their violation but doesn’t give them any points. Additionally, the points given to a user for a violation can be automatically removed after a specified amount of time via the Scheduled Tasks system.

The infraction system comes standard now, which means I don't have to use the unwieldy custom code we have been using... mind you, let's try it out first though!

There are other features which I have custom coded that also come standard which I'll need to test. As you can image, CF is running on HIGHLY MODIFIED code, so I'll need to redo all the code changes. That may take a while. :)

But hey, it's all for the glory of God. Plus it's fun!

How long do you think the system will be down for? Any estimates? Love, Tapero

How long do you think the system will be down for? Any estimates? Love, TaperoDon't ask for estimates! I know Erwin tries his hardest to get things done as fast as possible but I've never seen an estimate of down time ever accurate or even close :D Let's just say CF will be down for the whole weekend and then be pleasantly surprised if it's back up sooner :D

We don't know how long it will be down, but Erwin's Saturday, is Friday here in the U.S. So I imagine he'll start tomorrow.

Tough decision.

I'd like to re-iterate my previous suggestion to implement reverse proxies. I've implemented this twice now and as well as keeping the web servers up and stable, irt improves response time and provides a extra layer of security and monitoring.

Erwin, you are one of the few people I have ever heard say that making code changes was "fun".

the infractions sound kind of like driving tickets. A written warning doesn't go on your record (like the warnings with no points on here), and speeding tickets or moving violations are more severe against your record and your license the worse you behaved on the road. And they expire after a period of time.

sounds easy to understand to me, as long as it's perfectly clear what 'points' will be given for each type of infraction. I'd hate to see it be subjective to a moderator's opinion of how "bad" it was... then again, I suppose that's how it has to be most of the time.

Can't wait to see what happens. And I'm glad we do these on the weekends. It encourages me to turn my computer off for Shabbat! :D

I agree ^ the point system should be very clearly margined and explained out to all members, as actions can be taken very subjectively. The Lord said there would be tribulations though, didn't He. :D

I'm glad these are done on the weekends too, thank you, Erwin, for all your time and hard work that you do for all of us here so we can have this place of refuge, fun and worship.

I haven't had time to start the upgrades unfortunately - I spent all day yesterday at an eldership meeting for my church that went overtime due to some serious issues we are dealing with - this morning there was our church anniversary service, then a congregational meeting which again went overtime, again due to some issues. I had to do grocery shopping, and now I have to cook for my wife - she's finishing up assignments for her Psychiatry specialty training. I'm afraid I have to postpone the upgrades until next week. Very sorry about this.
