View Full Version : APOLOGIES FOR DOWNTIME: Both Database Servers Ran Out of Hard Disk Space!

Dear members

I want to apologise for the downtime over the last couple of hours (in fact, I'm not sure how long it was for since I was fast asleep) - I woke up to emails telling me that CF was down.

The cause is that we ran out of hard disk space - this is due to MySQL replication which creates a lot of log files to keep up with the replication - as a result overnight CF stopped working - no more hard disk space!

I contacted our server technicians who diagnosed the problem and have deleted those log files, so CF is now working again.

I'm trying to figure out a way to replicate the database without using up hard disk space.

A lot of you are wondering why CF has so much downtime - the truth is that CF is not like other forums - it is one of the LARGEST forums in the world - due to this fact, there are software and hardware issues that need to be worked out for CF to work at the fastest speed (hence why I run a slave database server that handles searches).

Thank you for being patient with us - I'm trying my best to work out a solution.

We all appreciate the hard work you do to keep the forum running, Erwin. I've often wondered myself why CF had SO much downtime - you've explained a lot. I had no idea it was so large in comparison to other forums, but really now that I think about it, it is huge. It was hard to navigate when I first came here.

Anyway, we support you, and we appreciate the hard work.

A big thank you from me as well, Erwin. I used to run a message board as well (not nearly this large) and I can understand the hard work that goes in to this. CF is so large and I can imagine you do have your hands full just trying to keep her up & running! God bless you for all the work you put in to this ministry!
