I know of one person who attends one of their churches. They have very calvinistic views and teachings. The one friend is very much an orthodox believer and really knows his bible well. I have only heard good things about Sovereign Grace.

They also believe that the gifts of the Spirit have not ceased.

You say that like it's a bad thing! :D

I have heard this as well. If I had to describe SGM to someone I'd say they lean Calvinistic w/gifts.

My best friend goes to a Sovereign Grace church--she and her family are not charismatic, but they have greatly been blessed by the church. She has told me, though, about the speaking in tongues, prophesying, etc. that often takes place in the worship service.

Thank you all for your replies. So far, I've noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Apart from a few raised hands and a few "amens", nothing remotely charismatic. I think I will meet with the pastor soon to clarify a few things. Thanks again!

Let me clarify then my brother! I believe I've made it clear here in the past that I've been riding the "third wave" for a little while now.
In regards to SG ministries - Not all are are actively engaged in practicing the gifts - though they all accept them. I know that "Metro Life Center" near Orlando does. I visited there about a year ago. They did it the right way too.
I live 45 minutes away from "Covenant Fellowship" near Phili - its just too far or I'd go there....

Well - I made the trip to Covenant Fellowship yesterday - it only took 30 minutes. I realized yesterday that is simply the place that I have to be. 30 minutes or 60 - just no getting around it. Looks like we can start our Soverign Grace adventure together "Grace Abounding!"
Just as a side note - I just moved so we're in the process of looking for a church - this wasn't a fly by the seat of the pants thing....

Oh, we describe ourselves as "Reformed Charismatic" *grin* We do believe all of the gifts are still to be used today, but we're not in anyway "wild" in our services. I personally speak in tongues when I pray, but it's not a public thing, we have "prophecies" on sunday mornings, but they aren't futuristic, but more exortations for the church. Encouragements. Our pastor did an EXCELLENT teaching on this last sunday, er the sunday before last. www.gracecommunity.ws (http://www.gracecommunity.ws) I got to the sovgrace church in Ashburn, VA we're having our fifth anniversary celebration Sunday! :-)

I am as Pentecostal is they come (Spirit Baptism as subsequent from salvation, Initial Evidence) but I cannot go to many Pentecostal churches because of the influence of the WoF.
I am now however attending a SGM church here in Massachusetts . . . AND I LOVE IT!
Doctrine, tongues and prophecy . . . YESSSSS!
The fellowship of SGM is essentially reformed . . . the only addition to their statement of faith that you may not find in other more classically reformed circles is the article on the Baptism in the Spirit. They (or should I now say "we") affirm an experience subsequent (logically if not chronologically) to salvation in the Holy Spirit for the purpose of the equipping of the saint for the work of the church in the mission of Jesus Christ . . . this experience is often the "gateway" into the manifestations of the more miraculous gifts of the Spirit (although the gifts can still be manifested prior to the experience).
In addition they full-on affirm not only the continuation of the Gifts (all of them) they affirm actively seeking and moving in the Gifts as well . . . I am in 7th HEAVEN!

I just bought one of their cd's and realised that we sing a few of their songs from another of their cd's.
I think I heard a Piper talk off their site the other day.
