AOL is switching to free/ad-based web access, and they aren't going to make those discs that come in the mail or are given away at the grocery store. It's like the end of an era for me.I've been collecting those things for 10 years and I have thousands of them! I've got them all the way back to the original AOL Gold, the first one that came out on CD rom instead of half a dozen little floppies.I get extreme glee from finding the ones I didn't have before! People give them to me as gifts! I like to walk around Circuit City just so I can pick up the free CD roms! What am I going to do for a hobby now?!

You are weird :P So what does AOL do? I'm a little out of the loop on it and don't really know anyone that uses it. Wish I'd saved the ones that came in the mail instead of using them for frisbies.

I don't know much about AOL, I just collect the discs. :DSometimes, for fun, I watch the event tracker in my firewall work. My computer pings itself like a thousand times a day. Is that normal?

I don't know about the pings...if ya don't like it you could always shut off the speakers? And what is an event tracker?

Ignorance is bliss...well sometimes.

I found a little pattern once where you take those CD-ROMs and crochet around them with a little red and green yarn and at the end you have a little christmas wreath doodad.
Or you could just enjoy your stunning new collection of free coasters?

Oh no, I'm keeping them as an investment.
Now that they are going to stop making them, they are going to get especially valuable.

LL,
I used to work at AOL, as I'm preparing the spare room for the new baby and cleaning out (over the next several weeks) I'll watch for them. If I come across some old ones I'll send them to you... watch for a PM in coming weeks!

I'm not even ashamed of being a nerd.
I embrace my nerdiness as one of the essences of my being. I am a female, over-educated, Christian nerd.
Sheesh, I took Latin in high school for crying out loud!

...poor thing...:D
...so it's ok be nerdy? I've been unsuccessfully trying for decades to be cool...and I'm always 8 years behind for some reason...I was looking to get a grill, but I couldn't afford gold so I got it priced in brass. Will brass rust in my mouth?

Grills are SOOO last year, man. Tooth jewelry is in. You have a cavity drilled into a healthy tooth, then you plug it with a diamond, or at least a CZ permanently cemented in.

I am so much of a nerd I just found out yesterday what a Grill is when we speak of today's "happening" fashions.
Here I had thought it was something you cook burgers on

You could make a giant wallhanging out of them :)

You could make a giant wallhanging out of them :)
But that would ruin their value as collectibles!

Ummm I hate to tell you this, but because they are so many, that itself may ruin the chances of them being collectables. Maybe not though. I used to use them as coasters. I have one of the itty bitty cdroms in my basement I keep for whatever reason :)
