View Full Version : Have you done any further study?

Droobie

For many Christians, after they're saved, that's it for them.  The only time they read the bible after that is when the Pastor asks everyone to turn to some verse or chapter during the weekend message.  But for others, studying the Bible is a part of life.  And taking the next step in formal studies only feeds one's spirit more.

How far have you taken your 'spiritual' studies?

I'm getting ready to start my second semester at bible college. Reading the word of God daily is probably the second best way (behind honest and consistent prayer) to keep ourselves in touch with the Lord and His will for our lives!

I read my bible when I read it. No real agenda or strict regiment. I think more important is to earnestly seek Christ. If I do this, I find myself in all the right places...in the word, fellowshiping with brothers and sisters, praying, singing, and falling more and more in love with Him and His Bride.

I've read the gosples many times and much of the rest of the OT at least once. I've read Genesis, Exodus and some of the next three, but they're all a blur :)

As for actual study, I've studied scripture related to final judgment and hell quite a bit and come to some unorthodox conclusions (however, you won't reach them by reading a KJV, you'll need to, at the least, substitute the proper Greek words in place of "Hell" (and learn their individual meanings). Most other translations don't have the original greek either, but it may be in the study notes.

In my opinion, there aren't enough options in the poll. What about people like me who studied the old testament in high school with a global out look, looking at the bible as a book of morals, a book of theology, a book of history, a book of poetry etc.
And what about the option "No but I really want to and don't know where to do so"

Chakotay2
17th July 2003, 09:19 PM
I've never taken any formal religious studies, but I've read a little on my own. I have several good reference works (Thru the Bible by J. Vernon McGee is an excellent book. I have access to concordances and helps, plus I use the International Sunday School book (I buy the one published once a year -- it's on shelves now). I have several other helps. The sad thing is I don't use them as much as I should.

I also have a Bible CD-ROM and I can always search things out on the Internet when I want to. :) There is a wealth of information for lay people who want to understand God's Word better.

Mine wasn't listed either - Bible studies at the church I attend! My first study was Hebrews! what a blessing for a new Christian! Currently attending church where the Pastor Emeritus was (and is still as a guest) seminary teacher! What a font of knowledge! I love these studies and take as many as time allows.

I study the Bible.

mesue
25th October 2003, 12:19 AM
I teach the Bible to children at church. I teach the Bible to people at work. I am not formally trained however my Pastor says that if we have attended church regularly for 3-5 years we will know more of the Bible than most Seminary graduates. I remember thinking when he said that "How sad for them, we get it free."

Islander
25th October 2003, 01:33 AM
I'm also disappointed with the options because there is a lot of study besides at Bible college. I'm not saying Bible college is a necessarily a bad thing but I've lived next to a seminary while in college and for the past 3 years next to a different one. Both basically teach the Bible is full of errors and not to be trusted. Even a better seminary is going to have lots of human wisdom though. Again I'm not saying such study is bad but it's not perfect.

I've read the Bible completely at least a couple twenty times and that's the Bible study. I've also used Hebrew/Greek dictionaries to understand verses in the context of the original languages which is the second best study. Finally I've read many Christian books, read commentaries of different view points, and listened to countless sermons and lectures.

i had to say only that i had taken a foundation course after being saved... but where does personal study fit in all this? in the OP it sounded like there was no in between - either you got saved and never studied again and your pastor had to pry your bible open for you, or you had taken actual courses.... i have only had one foundation course, but much discipling studies, and much personal studies, via bible study groups, personal bible study from books, and just studying myself passages and looking up in the strongs and lexicons and stuff....

My studies have been done through my spare time...me reading the Bible, reading books that explain the Bible, and having conversations with both Christians and non-Christians on the Bible. The Lord has blessed me with the talents of writing on Biblical subjects, with prayer, and has blessed me greatly with insight to the Bible. It has been my hope to teach others the Bible one day, ever since I recieved Christ as my Savior, and through the work that I do here and also over at TFHQ, that I have been able to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I did not answer the poll because it was lacking my answer.
I get really into it when I do my personal Bible study:
multiple version bibles, concordance, bible dictionary, commentaries, other reference books having to do with whatever my current subject matter is about.
I did attended a Christian college so still put out the OT and NT overview textbooks.

I've done a lot of personal study at the amateur level here at home on apologetics, exegesis (didn't get into the original languages but studied it at the English translation level), creation science, a little on soteriology, and basically just a little bit of everything. I really haven't come to a conclusion on exactly what I believe except for the existence of God and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. I haven't done much study at all on the history of Christianity though although I would like to. But of course, all of my studies were personal studies are most of my studies. I like to research things on my own. I often find classes to be a little too restrictive, short, and sometimes narrow-minded; not to mention overpriced for someone of my income level. Besides, by doing my own studies, I can come to my own conclusion about what I believe.

I have done extensive study on certain "non-Christian cults" and on some other religions as a matter of interest/interaction with adherents to various cults/other religions.

Also my years in youth work made searching the Scriptures necessary as part of my teaching of the Bible to both Christian and non-Christian kids and in dealing with issues concerning their lives.

I was required to do four credits of Bible subjects for year 12. I have completed three and a half of these. I also did an elective, Christian Worldview, studying the book "How Now Shall We Live?" by Charles Colson. This is an absolutely fantastic book, and I very highly recommend it to any Christian.

This is all I have done, apart from a fair bit of my own study and study with my parents and other Christians. I would like to do some sort of course one day, but I'm not sure what or when. I would like to study Greek to assist with my personal studies, as well.

I don't do any formal study but I do read a small portion daily, and I think its important to read at least a small portion of the Bible every day. I'm slowly making my way through "The Message", when I reach the end I'll have read the whole bible albeit in paraphrase.

BTW I am surprised to see that the most popular option (so far) is "I teach the bible to others!" There must be a lot of pastors and RE teachers on this thread.

There was not exactly an area on this poll for me. You see, I studdy out the bible on my own time, with me and God. And if I have questions then I go to my mother or father and seek their advice. But usually God shows me (I think I've gone to my mom only twice or something like that, and she always goes to my father. I ask DEEP questions if I ask them). I don't have a preacher license or certificate, and I don't go to classes to learn. I learn straight from the Bible and God. When I really want to learn His word I go to the REAL teacher, the Lord Himself.

I have taken several religious studies courses. However, I leatned the about the Bible from my own independent study. For me, this has continued for over twenty years now. Several ministers who have a semiary degree have told me that I know the bible better than they do. That kinda scares me because I'll be held to a high level of accountability on account of that. On the other hand, the bible and the Holy Spirit have lead me into a deeper knowledge and intimacy of the Lord.
