I am part of a group that are listening to online sermons and commenting on them. We listen to one a week, and chat about it afterward. I wondered if this was something we could do here.

I would love to share with you some of the wonderful preachers we have in the Sydney diocese. And I've really been enjoying listening to sermons from all around th world.

Anyone else keen?

Sounds like fun. Would they be Anglican sermons?

The evangelical Church i go to puts their sermons online. I don't like a couple of the preachers there but the rector and curate are both good.

I just listented to a Dick Lucas sermon on Ps 1. It was very good.

plus I love his very proper english accent.

I wonder if it would be better to make a new thread each week???

Also - it would be good to work out a way to let each other know of suggestions.
I would really like to share some Phillip Jensen sermons with you, but that is just a start. There are some really great preachers I have listened to that I would love to listen to more of and chat about. And I have only just gotten into online sermons so there is a feast to be had!

Any ideas on how best to co-ordinate this. How about we start with the Dick Lucas one I posted and chat about that this week while we nut out ways to co-ordinate it.

Otherwise - I can just go searching and share the ones I know... but that would mean there wouldn't be as much diversity.

Something seems... odd about taking a sermon outside of the context of the Mass. Still, no-ones forcing me to listen, I suppose.

Actually, I think this sermon was from a conference, not a church service. Not sure if that helps. If it is a difficulty for some we could restrict the sermons to ones given at conferences, or clearly label them for consciences sake. Would that help?? Along that line of thought I think we should label if they are a female also, for the sake of conscience.

I don't have a problem listening to sermons from church - I just love hearing the word of God taught! I'm not sure I see the difficulty myself, but I do respect that we need to follow our conscience.

in the first years of Christianity the Word and the Eucharist were celebrated seperately - remember the early church didn't have a bible yet. Most "protestants" celebrate the Word only, that's probably what makes it uncomfortable!

I thought this was a good talk. I'll paste in here the Psalm he is discussing:

Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Some of the bits that stood out for me:

Lucas asks, "Do I take my Creator seriously? Or, (more important) does my Creator take me seriously?" This is in reference to verses 1 & 2.

Verse 3, about the righteous "prospering" - Mr. Lucas went onto discussing what it means to prosper. He revealed it as meaning "to bear fruit". Not prosperity as the world describes it.

Turn from being a cynic or a scoffer - also referring to verse 1. We can all learn something here!

Lucas said, "However similar Christians & non-Christians are, they are really worlds apart. There are really only two ways" (righteous and wicked). He refers to his neighbours who are very good people, but as non-Christians, they are in the "wicked" category.

That's a good idea with the passage. Might have to make that a standard.

I also liked the positive/negative discussion. That we are defined not just by what we do, but by what we don't do. I thought that was interesting. We are doing the 10 commandments at the moment, so it gave me something to reflect on. I think I want to listen to it again.

The two ways to live thing he referred to is an evangelistic tool that a minister over here created. I'll find a link - it is really very good.

Here's the link (http://www.matthiasmedia.com.au/2wtl/).

The prosperity thing was excellent. I love how he painted the dilemna of the passages seemingly being a contradiction.

I listened to it when my kids were awake. I think I'm going to listen to it again tonight while they are asleep.

So how is this going to work? Is someone going to post a new thread with a sermon link?

I can post another thread if you like. Are we ready for a new sermon?

I think Erin's intention was that if we come across a sermon that we want to post, we can post one.
I don't think it will be necessary to start a new thread each time - might be good to keep them confined to one thread.

Cool! Erin has a CF Character!

Oh, i didn't see the one above.

Better listen to that one (though Karen and Erin have already ruined the ending for me :D )

I have a character because of a competition a fellow staffer started. Basically we had to dress (or in my case create) a character during the time we couldn't see images.

I found body type interesting - no descriptions, only numbers!

How about I give you a Philip Jensen one next

Select the first one in the Tough Questions lot. "Are you so dull". I haven't heard it, but have heard people say he has an excellent understanding of Mark. So lets give that a go.
