View Full Version : Any rain lately?

Yeah I know talking about the weather is boring, but I am really curious how the rain fall is around where you all live. I'm from souteast lower Mihcigan about 18 miles from Toledo Ohio. We have never seen such consistant rain and in abundance. On many summers I will have to mow my grass anywhere between 2-4 times and then before July gets here I may be done until fall rains start again.

I live in the country, all farm land, and I have corn growning next to my home that is nearly 10 feet tall, and everything is green.

Oh, and its hotter then all blazes too. :help:

How are you all doing with the rain?

Hot, and there's a decent amount of rain. Not as much as in wet years though. (We're in a dry cycle at the moment. Florida weather cycles depend largely on El Nino.) Last year was wet, and we were mowing the lawn several times a week.

Not much rain here at all in Alabama, we're having a drought here. Its bad enough here that a few of the counties around me including the one I live in has been considered a disaster area so the farmers can get some help if they need it. I don't know if we'll find hay for the winter for the horses, we're thinking of selling a couple.

Here's links to 4 maps that show how things are going around the country.

Visual Greeness (http://www.agribiz.com/weather/visual.html)
Relative Greeness (http://www.agribiz.com/weather/relative.html)
Departure from Average (http://www.agribiz.com/weather/departure.html)
Live moisture (http://www.agribiz.com/weather/livemoist.html) (important for fire)

If you look at the Departure from Average, that really brings out that there's this real nasty spot centered in western South Dakota. But also that in general, the West is dry. One thing that influences the indexes is that many areas have a lot of irrigation and so their greeness isn't that much different than normal, but with the extreme heat, even irrigation is hurting compared to normal.

Locally, April had one inch, May one inch, June two inches and July a half inch of rain. We started out very wet from carryover from last year, but due to unusual heat, we are getting dry. Early crops are pretty good, late crops and row crops, I'm not sure if there will be much to harvest. Corn is rolled up tight and light blue color. Soybeans wilted severely. Early wheat 30-40 bushels, late, a lot looks like about 10-15. Commodities have gone up some but not much compared to damage, crop insurance isn't enough to cover costs. Looking at my accounts receivable, unless the government passes a disaster bill, which is tough, this will probably be my last year in business.

Rain has been consistent here in mid-Missouri. If eveything goes the same as it has so far we plan on having a bumper crop in soy beans and corn. We are second rated in soy beans in the nation. Isn't that exciting?.........OR NOT!

Still it looks like the rain is slowing down which is standard for the "dog days of August" comming up.

Seems like there are alot of extrems in the nation on weather this year. Feast or famine. This last winter was the worst in 30+ years in northern Utah were my wife has relatives.

Those weather maps are sad but interesting. I would have never guessed that the Dakotas would be dryer then Arizone and New Mexico.

I didn't realize that you were a farmer Marv. I hope things turn around for you. :crossrc:

In the KC area we have missed a lot of the rain that you have received. The lakes and rivers are between 2-4 below normal levels. And of course, now we have had 10 out of the last 17 days in the 100's, and four more days this weekend and week.

We've had a ton of rain lately in Eastern PA. My basement went for a swim a couple of weeks ago...

It's been a little dryer here than normal, but I guess it rained last night after I went to bed, and I have heard we may have showers today. It's been a Paradise here, with temps in the mid-high 70's. Much better than the heat wave a week or so ago, where temps reached record highs, up to 107, according to one report I heard.

Well, right after church is POURED!!! ugh. There went my pool party I was supposed to have today. Maybe if the water dries up (it flooded the back yard and the street), we can have our party later than planned anyway.

New York. Plenty of rain few days back.
They needed to evacuate some people from cars on Grand Central Parkway - unheard of.

And now, 100 degrees.

Rain is normal here. Yeah, I'm jealous of mid 70s in July, too! Where's the 100s, huh Mel?

Actually, the rain has been keeping it a bit cooler here - but we've got those days that are in the 100s, too. That's why I try to stay inside and not have to do anything outside.

Not to rub it in, or anything...

According to a couple weather sites, it is ~62F right now, with a slight breeze coming from the coastal area. But the clouds look like they are burning off, who knows, we might yet reach the expected high of 78.

Our thermometer has shown 100 or more the last few days but still not as high as out west thanks goodness). Humidity is high too. I think I burned up my laptop last night as it shut down and won't boot up now. I'll try it in a couple days when it drops to the 80's

We finally got back north of the jet stream this week. Ground even got wet one day, few places got enough to help a little. Low should be close to 50 tonight, high in high 70's tomorrow.

Finally got to do a little work today, changed fluids on my Polaris Ranger, time to sell it. Doctor says I need the softest ride I can get if I'm going to continue scouting fields. I'm sure the Ranger will make some hobby rancher a great horse.

It's trying to rain tonight but it's just a drop now and then. It looks on radar like the whole area is getting a good rain, but it's not getting to the ground yet.

Barley harvest has started, the early barley looks to be the nicest crop of Budweiser you ever saw. So white it almost hurts your eyes to drive by. If we could just get a penny a bottle of beer for the barley that would really help. I figured it out this summer, a 60 bushel barley crop produces between $7-8,000 of taxes an acres and one semi load of barley has a street value of about a quarter million dollars.

Yep there's definitely money in beer. Unfortunately when the economy gets bad and people get laid off they still have cash for cigs and beer.

Glad to see te weather breaking up there. Still really hot down here though in the hundreds today and tomorrow it will go down to high 80 till sat and then up in the 90's again.........

In Iraq there is above 110 this whole week.
And the troops are wearing their equipment and weapons.

And we whine about heat up here in New York.

That reminds me Ed, I got this in the e-mail.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!!

Your alarm goes off; you hit the snooze and sleep for another 10 minutes.

He stays up for days on end.

You take a warm shower to help you wake up.

He goes days or weeks without running water.

You complain of a "headache", and call in sick.

He gets shot at, as others are hit, and keeps moving forward.

You put on your anti war/"don't support the troops" shirt, and go meet
up with your friends.

He still fights for your right to wear that shirt.

You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket.

He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.

You talk trash on your "buddies" that aren't with you.

He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

You complain about how hot it is.

He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow.

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order
wrong.

He does not get to eat today.

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.

He wears the same things for months, but makes sure his weapons are clean.

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.

He doesn't have time to brush his teeth today.

You are angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.

He is told he will be held an extra 2 months.

You call your girlfriend and set a date for that night.

He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home.

You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday.

He holds his letter close and smells his love's perfume.

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.

He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they'll
ever meet.

You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything.

He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own government and
remembers why he is fighting.

You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of the men like him.

He hears the gun fire and bombs.

You see only what the media wants you to see.

He sees the bodies lying around him.

You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.

He does what he is told.

You stay at home and watch TV.

He takes whatever time he is given to call and write home, sleep, and eat.

You crawl into your bed, with down pillows, and try to get comfortable.

He crawls under a tank for shade and a 5 minute nap, only to be woken by
gun fire.

You sit there and judge him, saying the world is a worse place because
of men like him.

If only there were more men like him.

IF YOU DON'T STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS,

PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO STAND IN FRONT OF THEM!!!
